When it comes to aesthetics, Raf Simons and Alexander Wang couldn’t be further apart. But both designers can agree on the appeal of Midwestern model Lex Herl. Making her runway debut at Simons’s first show for Calvin Klein yesterday, then following up with an appearance for Alexander Wang tonight, Herl has quickly cemented herself as a girl to watch this season, and it wouldn’t have happened without a little help from her pals back home. “I became a model through a friend of a friend who has a connection with Ford Models,” said Herl. “She connected me with my agent in Chicago, Christopher Rucker, and the rest is history.”
The breakneck pace of Fashion Month is still new to Herl, but she has quickly found herself at ease with the community she’s found backstage. “There is a glamorous aspect to the industry, but what I appreciate most is how kind and welcoming everyone has been,” she says. “My Fashion Week experience has been nonstop! I love it.” The thrill of stepping on the runway for some of the biggest American brands in existence isn’t lost on Herl. A fan of fashion long before she started modeling, she admits to pinching herself now that she’s in the business full-time. She’s even got her sights set on working with one of her heroes, photographer Steven Meisel. “I love everything he shoots! His work is so dreamy, and it takes me to another place when I look through,” she says.
While she awaits her moment in front of the camera with fashion legends, Herl is content to enjoy her current success even if it means studying for her SATs in between shows. With her week in full swing and plenty of shows on the horizon, the 17-year-old model only has one backstage complaint: Everyone seems to think she’s from somewhere else. “Most people assumed I was Eastern European and couldn’t speak English—it’s so crazy to me!” says Herl with a smile. “Everyone is SO surprised when they hear me speak and the fact that I’m an American from ‘Wis-can-sin.’ I’m from Madison—our town is known for beer and cheese. Good ol’ Midwest!”
