NOW CASTING LEX HERL SHE'S WALKED EVERYTHING FROM CALVIN KLEIN TO CHANEL, BUT STILL APPRECIATES A GOOD SMOOTHIE BY ALI WEBB AND ABRAHAM MARTINEZ
JUL 17, 2018
Lex Herl has been doing the fashion week circuit for only about a year, but her resume already puts her among the ranks of a seasoned pro. Her first show just happened to be Raf Simons' Calvin Klein debut, putting the beginning of her career alongside a new, social commentary-focused era in fashion. Since then, she's become a Chanel regular, starred in campaigns for Coach and Valentino, and most recently walked in Alexander Wang's first off-season show. It's safe to say that if you don't know about her already, you will soon.
Herl did not grow up surrounded by fashion, instead spending her formative years living between two Great Lakes in Madison, Wisconsin. Through her upbringing, she developed a love for summers on the water, a grounded attitude, and more everyday but still passionate goals of being a doctor or nutritionist. "I'm most passionate about wellness, both mental and physical," said the up-and-coming model, who makes time for healthy eating and a varied workout routine amidst her busy schedule.
In the middle of a seemingly never-ending fashion calendar, CR had a conversation with Herl to learn more about her favorite foods, style philosophy, and how she is adjusting to her fairly new lifestyle.
How would you say that your life has changed over the past year?
It's been pretty crazy. I moved to New York and have been working. I thought I'd be in college right now, but instead, I'm here.
What surprised you most about the modeling industry?
I was surprised by how sensible most of the girls are. People often mistake models as being superficial, but to be successful in this industry requires a lot of strength and resilience.
What do you do to relax after a long day on set?
After a long day, I love to go back to my apartment to do some yoga or Pilates, cook a light dinner, and just relax.
Is there a piece of advice you think of often?
I believe it’s so important to really be true to who you are because this ultimately attracts the right people and opportunities into your life. It’s not exactly unique, but it’s something I find people too often forget.
What is something that would surprise people about you?
I actually used to be extremely camera shy! However, modeling has really forced me to challenge that fear, which is very empowering.
Where have you always dreamed of traveling to and why?
I’d love to travel to Kauai. It’s beautiful but not as urbanized or touristic as some other islands. I’m often working in big cities, and I crave being in nature away from all the noise.
What is your favorite meal of the day?
I love breakfast! I’ve started nearly every morning the past few years with a smoothie. It’s like a ritual for me now.
What show were you most nervous for? What was it like backstage?
My first one, Calvin Klein. That was pretty exciting. There was a ton of energy because it was Raf Simons' first show as well. It was a really fun time.
How would you describe your personal style?
Feminine but laid back and pretty simple.
What's one item every girl should have in her closet?
A good pair of jeans.
What are the last three songs you've listened to?
Lately, I've been listening to a lot of Frank Ocean and Alina Baraz.
Where do you go to have fun?
I love to be outdoors. If I'm in New York, I like to go to Central Park. If I'm home, I'm out paddleboarding on the lake.
