Lia Pavlova

Lia Pavlova: Fall’s Most Popular Girl

Age: 21

Height: 5’10.5″

Instagram: @pavlovalia

Agency: One Management

Hometown: Pskov, Russia

Russian model Lia Pavlova earned top honors this season, walking in 71 shows — opening three and closing four — including Chanel, Valentino, Saint Laurent, Dior and Alexander Wang. (Fun fact: Her twin sister, Odette, came in second place with 62 shows.) Pavlova also nabbed a spot in Gucci’s recent pre-fall campaign. Here, she comes up for air.

WWD: How does it feel to know that you’ve walked the most shows this season?

Lia Pavlova: It’s a weird feeling because I couldn’t imagine that it would happen, but I’m very happy and grateful.

WWD: Your twin sister, Odette, was the runner-up of the season with a total of 62 shows walked. Did you guys always know you wanted to be models?

L.P.: Never. It just happened. Thankfully we had an agency in Russia who really supported and believed in us and placed us with other agencies across the world.

WWD: What’s the biggest difference between you two?

L.P.: Odette has bigger lips, eyes and nose. Some people say Odette is more feminine and I’m more androgynous, I don’t know. Maybe it’s true. We have similar characters and we always have a lot of fun backstage.

WWD: What were some standout runway moments for you?

L.P.: The Givenchy show. The runway was like a labyrinth. It was so cool and at the same time a little bit of a challenge.

WWD: What were some of the most stressful moments of the season?

L.P.: I had to shoot a campaign at the beginning of the season so I missed a lot of the castings for New York Fashion Week. This was a little stressful for me but in the end everything worked out really well.

WWD: What are your tricks for staying focused during such a hectic, stressful time?

L.P.: To keep in your mind that you are not the only one who is tired — all the designers, stylists, casting directors and other models feel the same way. When everyone understand and helps each other, it helps to put me in a good mood.

WWD: Do you have any funny memories from the shows?

L.P.: Some of the funniest memories from the shows are the conversations you have with other models who become your friends. When everyone is tired and all you want to do is sleep, it’s important to try to have fun to help you get through.

WWD: What was your favorite hair-and-makeup look?

L.P.: I loved the beautifully simplistic hair and makeup at the Paul Smith show.

WWD: What do you carry with you at all times during fashion week?

L.P.: Some plasters. [Brit slang for Band-aids.]

WWD: What do you do backstage to pass the time?

L.P.: Rest, eat and read.

WWD: What did you do after the shows every night?

L.P.: In the evening after shows, I normally had fittings every night for shows the next day. After fittings, sleep, sleep, sleep!

WWD: What would be your advice to a model who is walking the runway for the first time?

L.P.: Don’t worry and just try to do your best for all the people who worked so hard to make it an important show and day.

WWD: Have you learned any lessons about fashion week from when you first started walking in the shows?

L.P.: All people think that it’s an easy job but it’s not.

There is not a single interesting thing about Pavlovas sisters.

I used to think the same as you do, especially after seeing them dominating the show season (I'm not a fan of catwalk pictures anyway). But then I ended up by chance on Lia's portfolio one morning and was impressed by the difference between her awesome looks in some printworks and these runway images that leave me cold. Since then, she started growing on me seriously.

10 things you need to know about lia and odette pavlova

As they star in the Gucci pre-fall 16 and Pucci spring/summer 16 campaign respectively, get to know model duo Lia and Odette Pavlova.

Identical twins, Lia and Odette Pavlova can finish each other's sentences and read each other's mind. Born in the city of Pskov, in Western Russia, they exploded onto the scene this season when they walked a combined total of 133 shows, 6 of which they opened and 5 of which they closed. Discovered five years ago - Lia in the supermarket and Odette just outside it - the twins have been carving out a name for themselves ever since. Although thick as thieves (they're both Tauruses, after all), when it comes to their careers, the pair prefer to operate independently and are signed to different agencies. Currently starring in the Gucci Pre-Fall 16 and Pucci spring/summer 16 campaign respectively, Lia and Odette's star shines ever brighter. Here are 10 things you need to know about them.

1. They have that twin thing going on…

L: We can understand each other without words...it's funny.
O: I'm a firm believer in telepathy. We often can feel when something significant has happened to the other one of us and speak and think in the same time. We've even been known to get sick at the same time. Sometimes being a twin can be strange because no one can explain the working relationship between us - it's cool.

2. They give very good advice…

L: Do not give up. Keep doing everything as best as you can and try to always look good and be yourself.
O: Believe in yourself, be tolerant and be kind to everyone you work with. Be individual and celebrate your individuality. Be strong and ready to face difficulties. Always be thankful for everything.

3. They didn't always want to be models…

L: I wanted to be an accountant… now everything has changed.
O: I always knew I was a creative person but couldn't put my finger on exactly what I wanted to do.

4. They would describe each other as….
O: Big eyes!
L: Hysterical.

5. This is who would play them in a movie…

L: I think Odette should play me because she knows everything about me and my life already.
O: I'll answer when somebody decides to make the film!

6. They're really into music…

O: I love Placebo, Leni and Begin the End are my favourite songs.
L: When I was a child and our mum got me ready for bed, I was always listening to this band called Enigma, it's really beautiful, it's a good soundtrack to falling asleep.

What advice would you give to young girls lacking in confidence, who want to follow in your footsteps?

L: Don't give up. Keep doing everything as best as you can and be yourself.
O: Believe in yourself, be tolerant and be kind to everyone you work with. Be an individual and celebrate your individuality. Be strong and ready to face difficulties. Always be thankful for everything.

8. They're actually not as similar as you think…

L: We have different characters I think.
O: We're used to people thinking that because we're twins we're exactly the same, but we don't mind that!

9. Their ultimate girl gang would include…
O: Our mum!
L: Of course.

10. They've got some pretty big dreams…

L: I want just simple things; happiness and love.
O: My dream for the future is to keep following the goals I have set for myself. To keep working in the fashion industry, doing what I love, and to know that my family are happy and healthy.
