Here is a little article/interview with Lily Cole and Marie Helvin (there is a gorgeous pic in there but I cant scan it) from the 90th edition of UK Vogue (Dec. issue):
Lily cole arrives looking wan and a bit grumpy, as well she might. Half way through the London Week slogathon, she's working show after show (tiring) and being hounded to death by the world's press (beyond harrowing). Thank to Culture Secetary Tessa Jowell's bossyboots intereference, Lily is suddenly number one global target for Sixe-Zero Skinny Models Who Must Be Banned. Crossly she says "Why me?" Close up, I can see why: it's because shes the prettiest of the current crop of girls. And the (defferd) place at Kings College, Cambridge adds a nice not-so-dumb-model-model twist to the front page stories. "She is not a size zero!" says Marie Helvin, who is pretty damn slender herself. "Her figure is fantastic. She has breasts, a behind, she looks perfectly healthy. I wish I'd had her figure" Marie is godmother to Lizzie Jagger (another prime target for global banning) and protectively hissing with indignation about the unfairness.
These two are linked by their trade and by their trade and by their kitten-faces (they're all forehead and eyes: the camera loves that)They're seperated by nearly four decades (which is kind of hard to believe) and a foot in height. Which means that Bailey spends a good while bending, coiling and draping Lily's long body around Marie. He's guiding not manhandling. No need for any rough stuff.
At 18, Lily already knows she is paid to be putty in photographer's hands. "I was photographed by Bailey ages ago. I did an advertising shoot for Ballantyne. And a cover for the Observer - I was 16; it was a feature about 16 year olds. Absolutely hilarious. I was quite scared though. You have to have balls of steel."
Bailey barely touches Marie. Doesn't need to. She's istinctive and extrememly comfortable. As he bends Lily's body around her, she intuitively follows his line. She was a wife of Mr Bailey for 10 years (from 1975). "He photographed me all the time, every day, every where" she says "He has a camera in bed with him. Its what he does, all the time"
They're in very similar dresses by Donna Karan. Under the lights, Marie's black jersey column looks as though Halston himself moulded it on to her body during The Last Days of Disco. Lily's in dark red, looks cutting edge modern and spare. But theres no sense of the trime warp, no retro feeling. The dresses do that thing that great dresses are designed to do : they float out of time and period. Bailey gets up behind the camera and starts up his routine yelling "Thats great, like that, thats it". At every yell Marie's eyes flare. By the third roll he's sounding deranged: "Madness! C'mon thats not madness! Lets have some fakin madness here!" At the last yell, Marie's eyes flare and Lily's mouth opens into a half shadow of a smile. "Thats it"
Afterwards, I ask them what the madness was about. "Madness?" asks Lily blankly. Yes, he kept yelling for more madness. They look at each other and roll their eyes. "Maaaagic", drawly Marie "Magic's what he wanted" Right. Meaning Lilys open her mouth a millimetere more and Marie pops her eyes a millimetere more? They both laugh immoderately. Yes, that's magic. Lily adds rudely "And I was saying a spell in my head."
Sorry for any typos :flower:
