Forget Brazil—The Models Everyone’s Talking About Now Are All From the Dominican Republic
2ropzxg.jpg
Like any other fashion trend, model scouts tend to hone in on a locale (Brazil, Russia) and seek out the very best in what it has to offer, and this season, models from the Dominican Republic were front and center at nearly every big show. While Dominican catwalkers have always had a place in fashion, with stars like Omahyra Mota and Arlenis Sosa setting the standard, the Spring 2016 season provided a moment for the new generation to shine. Led by top models and close friends Ysaunny Brito and Lineisy Montero, the latest crop of Dominican beauties was a welcome addition to Fashion Week’s lineups in Paris and beyond.

Given her accomplishments, it’s hard to believe Montero has only been modeling for less than a year. In that short time she has snagged a Prada campaign, become Spring 16’s top runway walker, and racked up impressive work with top photographers like Steven Meisel and Paolo Roversi.

The Most Booked Model of Fashion Month Was Black, But Everyone Else Was White
29nuv0j.jpg

Diversity in fashion is more than just a hot button issue—it’s an emotional topic, too. That’s understandable: When things are declared “beautiful” or “cool,” and those things don’t include us, it’s more than annoying. It’s hurtful. So when The Business of Fashion reported that this season’s catwalks were 79.4% white, the Internet collectively groaned.

But there’s one important fact that’s gone unmentioned in these discussions, and it’s pretty auspicious: the model who booked the most shows this season is black. Her name is Lineisy Montero, and she’s a 19-year-old from the Dominican Republic who is already known for her huge smile and her halo of naturally textured hair. Montero walked a staggering 68 shows (including Chanel, Balmain, and Prada), according to Models.com.

“Lineisy is a unique yet approachable beauty,” says casting director Piergiorgio Del Moro, who counts Versace and Mugler as clients. “She can translate a designer’s vision while injecting some of her own personality into the mix.” Miuccia Prada agrees—she cast the Santo Domingo native in her Fall 2015 ad campaign, shot by Steven Meisel. Covers of Teen Vogueand Dazed and Confusedsoon followed.

Of course, one young woman can’t—and shouldn’t—be the rebuttal to dozens of pale blonde show lineups. But Montero is a rising star with increasing visibility. Backstage at Giambattista Valli, we witnessed makeup artists guard her chair so she could get her eyes done without countless cameras in her face. And just this week, Vogue.com proclaimed, “the models everyone’s talking about now are all from the Dominican Republic.”

Let’s hope they keep talking about them—and other beautiful girls who don’t fit the “mold,” or in fashion’s case, the Barbie toy box—all through campaign season, too.

She is always getting so much press everywhere, she will never be the token moc like some people say. This has never happened to any moc before. This is just the beginning for La Montero not even a year of modeling and she has accomplished so much.

Just a random question: Are her and Emely Montero related to each other? Both are Monteros and live in Dominican Republic, but I'm still wondering...

No, they're not related, Montero's a very common last name in D.R :)

LINEISY MONTERO WAS FASHION MONTH'S MOST POPULAR MODEL

30uwmtc.jpg
It's no secret that the fashion industry has a major diversity problem—but this season we saw a little glimmer of hope. While 79.4% of the models on the Spring 2016 runways were white, according to BoF, the most popular model to hit the catwalks from New York to Paris was a black model, Lineisy Montero. The 19-year-old hails from the Dominican Republic and walked in 68 shows, Models.com reported, with Montero snagging the coveted opening spots at Derek Lam, Jason Wu, Joseph, Koché and Paco Rabanne. The model, who's signed with NEXT Models, debuted as a Prada exclusive in February 2015, and later appeared in the brand's fall ad campaign. Since then, all the major brands, from Gucci to Celine, have fallen for this natural-haired beauty. Hopefully this is a sign of more diverse times to come.

^ So exciting to get to watch Lineisy blossom into a superstar right in front of our eyes. She could turn into the face of the late 2010s if handled just right. This was the same kind of buzz when Kate first hit the scene in the 90s. Just saying :buzz:

She's always referred to as the black model who stormed the runways but she's Latina too, right? I know you can be black and Latina but I personally think it'd be nice if articles acknowledged her Latina roots too and not how she's just representing black models.
