Lisa Cant interview

Lisa Cant (22), was born in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. A daughter of two geologists, she evolved into one of the world's most successful supermodels. Currently, Lisa travels around the world on numerous modeling assignments and prestigious advertising campaigns, gracing all the top fashion magazines. Her beauty and personality shine at every moment, and she transmits a breathtaking aura. It all started in an IKEA store...

Author: Jonathan.L - owner Models Observer
November 2007

* Lisa, how are you these days?

Lisa Cant: Hello! I'm good. Relaxing on a day off.

* What was your first big break?

Lisa Cant: The first significant thing I did in the modeling industry was two back-to-back covers for Italian Vogue with Steven Meisel. It definitely was the catapult to success in my career.

* How did your parents react when you started modeling? Modeling is so far from Geology!

Lisa Cant: My parents were surprised when I started modeling, because I was never the "pretty one" in high school. Also, I'd never considered modeling before, it just all sort of happened for me. My mom was fully supportive, and we kept it from my dad in the beginning, because I was a bit embarrassed about the whole idea!! After he found out, he thought it was funny that the daughter that looks most like him became a model.

* What do you enjoy most in modeling?

Lisa Cant: The part I most enjoy is seeing myself in magazines and posters. Even after a few years, it still excites me. The best moment was the first time I saw my ads for Juicy Couture in Times Square.

* Choosing the right model agency is an important step in building a Modeling career. How did you meet Pat Collins, owner of Images Model Management? How would you describe your cooperation and friendship?

Lisa Cant: When I was 14 years old, I was approached by another model in an Ikea, and she gave me Pat's card. Our first meeting was quite eye opening, because I had never considered this profession before, and didn't know how it worked. Pat was very informative, and gave me all the information I needed to start my career. She was also very understanding in the beginning, when I was very shy and wasn't sure this was the right path. She's always stuck by me when I would get intimidated about leaving home, intimidated by the industry in general. Pat has become more than just my agent; she is also my friend, and a friend of the family.

* As one of the world's leading models, you work all around the globe and meet so many different styles. How do you bridge the gap between cultures so successfuly? What have been some of the challenges you have faced in the beginning?

Lisa Cant: The language barrier is always a challenge, and is something that won't go away. I find you have to understand that you're in their country, not the other way around. So I try to be respectful of the different cultures, but mainly I try to be nice. Everyone understands a smile, and as long as you're trying, people are quite helpful.

* Which steps you have taken and still take to ensure your career in the modeling industry?

Lisa Cant: I always try to be professional. I try my best to always be on time, and treat everyone with respect. The "diva" attitude is not a characteristic people in the fashion industry like anymore. It helps when people enjoy working with you, and have a fun day.

* What is the secret of a successful photo shoot?

Lisa Cant: In a word? Adaptability. To be able to listen to the direction you're given, and change it so it works for you. No matter what, you still need to look beautiful. For example, if they want me to look angry, I try doing the expression without going too far.

* What is typical week like in the life of Lisa Cant?

Lisa Cant: I don't have to work every day, so generally I read a lot of books, go to yoga and hang out with friends. Then the next day I might have a fitting, and that takes about an hour up at a designer's office. I try on the clothes that I'm going to be wearing in a shoot or show for the next day, and the alterations are made. The next day I might be doing a photoshoot, and they generally start around 9 am and can end any time between 5pm to midnight.

* What do you think about this research in the Journal of Positive Psychology?

Lisa Cant: This article is not a surprise for me, namely that models are not as well adjusted or happy as other people. The perception is that models are perfect, however, that is only judging them superficially. Being judged solely based on looks is not necessarily the healthiest thing for any person. Also, the unpredictability of the job, and the fickleness of the fashion industry can cause anyone to become less happy. It's also a lot of pressure from a very young age to grow up quickly, and act as a professional in a highly competitive industry.

* Many women look up to you and you are a beauty icon. What is your beauty routine? Is it easy to be so beautiful?

Lisa Cant: My beauty routine is pretty simple. Get lots of sleep and moisturize. I can easily sleep 12 hours a day, and try to, despite my schedule. It keeps me refreshed and gives me the energy I need for my day. I have chronically dry skin, so I moisturize with a good cream every day. Of course I enjoy being beautiful, it allows me to have these amazing opportunites. When people find out I'm a model, it is hurtle not to be perceived as "stupid", because my job is mainly about physical beauty.

* What was the best gift you have ever received?

Lisa Cant: It's a surprisingly hard question! I have received many amazing dresses and outfits from designers, but I couldn't pick one that is "the best". I have also received many amazing trips around the world, however they were work trips. I guess it has to be this little diamond star necklace. I wear it all the time.

* Let's say I wish to travel Alberta. What great places worth a visit in Alberta?

Lisa Cant: Alberta's beauty is in the outdoors. Banff, in the mountains, is one of the most beautiful places I've ever been in my life. The mountains there are the most spectacular that I've ever seen. The skiing is amazing, and the Banff Springs Hotel is gorgeous.

* How do you spend you free time? What are your hobbies/interests outside of your profession?

Lisa Cant: I love reading fiction novels, and hanging out with my girlfriends. Most of them are also models that I've met at work, and so it's sometimes hard to meet up with each other, but we always make the effort. Right now I'm studying for my SAT exam, because eventually I want to go back to school in New York, so that takes up a lot of time.

* Do you have a favorite motto, quote, or words to live by?

Lisa Cant: Let it be. I don't stress about things that are out of my control, and it helps me be more relaxed at work and in life. I am not scared when I'm on airplanes or on the runway.
