Some people are discovered by modeling agents in their local mall. In her local Forever 21, last season’s Saint Laurent exclusive Londone Myers was discovered by an autopsy technician. The Georgia-born and -bred catwalker met the Georgetown University–based tech in Washington, D.C. and quickly learned the ins and outs of postmortem examination as his assistant, including brain and spinal extractions. “The doctor who was mentoring me didn’t think I was going to be as hands-on when I started,” said Myers over pie and makeup at Vogue.com’s Pat’s Diner extravaganza. “He thought I would just stand there and watch, but I was like, ‘No, hand me a scalpel! Hand me a bone saw!’ ”
Though a burgeoning career in medicine was fulfilling, when Myers was scouted the second time—this time by The Lions—she couldn’t resist the pull of the fashion industry. She soon found herself modeling for Kanye West’s Adidas Originals presentation and snagging a coveted exclusive for Saint Laurent. For the down-to-earth Myers, getting swept up in fashion month’s whirlwind provided her with a crash course in glamour—and her first trip to Paris. “Before modeling, when I thought of fashion it was Target. I didn’t realize how big a deal everything was,” said Myers. Meeting Hedi Slimane was a thrill. “[Hedi] was just so cool. He said that he liked my look and wanted to shoot me in a more natural setting in Los Angeles, in addition to having me walk the show. I was honored. It was also my first time in Paris, and since it was an exclusive, I didn’t have to do other shows. That gave me a chance just to walk around and explore the city—which I loved!”
Since making her debut, Myers has fully embraced her new life as a model: settling into a new apartment in Brooklyn, regularly going to castings, and getting to work with some of the industry’s top talents. With her star on the rise, Myers has a bright modeling career ahead of her, but she hasn’t forgotten where she came from. Volunteering her time at hospitals and studying up on her gross anatomy, she remains fascinated by medicine, and admits to feeling nostalgic when she thinks back to her tech days. “I do miss the quiet. Working in fashion is the complete opposite; it’s like night and day,” said Myers. “I could see myself going back to it one day—I’d like to mentor kids so they can learn and understand the field. Death is just another version of life, a state that we go into and have to accept—in its own way, it is beautiful.”
