Tarajia Morrell and Lyn Devon
“To be honest, I don’t really go to fashion shows,” claimed Julia Stiles at designer Lyn Devon’s Fall/Winter 2006 runway show at The Players Club in Gramercy Park. “I’m usually never in town for Fashion Week. I came here on a whim. I like supporting young, upcoming designers.” Stiles, in an emerald green top she found in Prague while shooting a movie, knows Devon through mutual friends from Brown University. The guest list at Devon’s show ran like a who’s who of chicettes. We spotted Tinsley Mortimer (in Zac Posen), Minnie Mortimer (just back from the West Indies), Jessica Joffe, Jill Kargman, Allison Aston, Hilary Dick, Kim Ende Heyman, Lily Atherton, gallerist Melissa Bent, Starrett Zenko, Kari Talley, Linda Lambert, Felicia Taylor, Tina Louise, Glamour’s Ali Nichols, Devon Schuster, Susan Shin, Tatiana Papanicolaou, Lara Meiland and Town & Country’s Lilly Bunn. Also at Devon’s show were Arthur Elgort, celebrity trainer David Kirsch, Luigi Tadini, Quest columnist Andrew Black, Dhani Harrison (George’s son), Bloomingdale’s David Gould and Anne Keating, Christian Leone and John Auerbach.

Lake Bell of Surface has known Devon since childhood. “Lyn is like my sister,” Bell gushed. “Our parents are best friends. We were basically born at the same time.” Bell, who is in town shooting the cop drama Pride and Glory starring Colin Farrell, Ed Norton and Nick Nolte, was wearing a long dark blue Devon skirt with a pleated back. “This is from the collection. It didn’t make the show, so I got to wear it.”Devon’s models walked down aisles, through the crowd, and onto a stage. The collection had a noir actress feel with silhouettes from the 1930s and 1940s. There were lots of fitted, long skirts and dresses. We loved a silk and wool cross jacket that buttoned on the side kimono style. A short cream velvet dress had an abundance of buttons down the front, giving the piece an Asian flavor. Devon’s palate was earthy, with some jewel tones and metallics. She made great use of piping and geometric prints like a zigzag to give shape and contour to evening dresses (think vintage Hervé Leger). A silk plaid shirtdress recalled Ralph Lauren, while a pleated coat echoed the minimalist chic of Zoran. Many of Devon’s models wore high-waisted belts with a semi-abstract silver “LD” monogram buckle. The long scarves with deep pockets were fun. Who doesn’t want two extra compartments to keep your hands warm or stash your Crackberry?
Stiles said the collection reminded her of 1930s movie starlets. “It was so romantic. She mixed masculine pantsuits with more feminine fabrics. I loved the gown with a turtleneck and a piped skirt.” After the presentation, The Daily sat with Bell. “I was crying during the show,” she confessed. “I’m really proud of Lyn. It’s breathtaking to see it all together. It’s emotional for me.” Bell’s favorite pieces were a see-through top worn with a high-waisted gold tube skirt and a gold chiffon dress with “crazy gloves.” Bell plans on sporting a skirt by Devon on The Today Show this Monday. “It was all very wearable,” she concluded. “I could easily rock it all.”
