i-Profile: Mae Mei Lapres

Half Chinese, half Canadian, and immaculately French, Mae Mai Lapres is the 20-year-old Just Kids model who’s pretty as a picture and clever as a clog.

Call her Mae, or Mae Mei, “as you like”, she says coolly in her screen test for Italian fashion house Costume National, posing with a white parrot and stroking it softly with her cheek. Mae, or Mae Mei, wanted to be a vet when she was little, growing up in Paris with an assortment of exotic pets including an iguana and a cockatoo. Now 20, she was top of our ‘ones to watch’ notes, scribbled on an iPhone at the Paris shows in February and has just appeared, covered in colour, in photographer Sølve Sundsbø and Fashion Director Charlotte Stockdale’s Just Kids Issue, fashion story (scroll down for the film). A black bowl cut, giant eyes, a delicate nose and a knowledgable smile are reasons enough to stand out, but quick fingers on a piano and harp, and a songbird voice are the icing on this FM Model Agency’s cake (YouTube and enjoy). i-D online asked the giggly pretty about her childhood memories and “kiss kiss” love life!

What was your childhood in Paris like? It was hard growing-up in Paris in a private Catholic school. I went from loser to freak haha but I had very cool friends and all the bad memories don’t seem so bad as I grow up! I had many fun hobbies like the harp, piano, solfège and my parents always let me have tonnes of weird animals like iguanas, cockatoos, dogs and hamsters.

What’s your earliest memory? Chickenpox in Beijing, 40 degrees, forced to stay in bed with no aircon. I looked like a baby monkey, itching all over my body, traumatising!

What TV shows did you watch as a child? FRIENDS!!!!

When you were little, what did you want to be when you grew up? A vet. Boring I know but at least it wasn’t a Princess. OH and when I was even younger I wanted to be a witch with powers.

What was the shoot with Sølve Sundsbø and Charlotte Stockdale like? AWESOME! Everyone was kind, friendly, chilled out and very professional!

What’s the best thing about being young today? All the opportunities we have, all the possibilites to develop our ideas.

Are you in love? Hell yes! My sweet Nil Nil who’s been sharing my life 24 hours a day for over a year now <3

What’s your perfect date? A nice warm night, hand in hand without forgetting the kissy kiss part!

How do you feel when you look in the mirror? Different every time! But never happy or desperate. It’s just something you have to do at some point in the day!
