According to Peter Blake the who did the cover for Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club band when they contacted Mae West for permission to use her image she remarked "What would I be doing in a Lonely Hearts Club? No I won't be on it." So then they had the Beatles write her personally and tell her they'd very much like her to be on it and then she agreed.
