this is about celebrities, rather than models but still.. thought it would be a nice addition to the thread;)

jade jagger, ben stiller, maggie gylenhaal, Mark Wahlberg, cate blanchett, uma thurman, jennifer aniston, brad pitt, julia roberts and madonna are all said to use dr. hauschka, by dr. hauschka. you can view this information here:

not really a model tip, but
Kevyn Aucoin used to use Visine Eye Drops as a primer on the entire face before applying foundation (or mix it with foundation-I don't remember exactly).
It is a potent astringent, and the same way it tightens blood vessels in your eye, it tightens pores on the face and makes the skin look perfectly smooth and poreless.

Blusher Tips From the Pros

• ‘Invest in a proper blusher brush,’ advises Bobbi Brown. ‘The teeny ones you find in compacts just aren’t up to the job, and will give visible brush strokes.’

Kevyn Aucoin sometimes applies blusher to the cleavage and along the hairline, too. ‘It adds warmth to powder and foundation, making the whole look more realistic and healthy-looking.’

Carol Shaw advises applying blush when you’re smiling: ‘Add a little blush in that ball of your cheek and bring it back a little towards the bone.’

• ‘You want to look like the noon sun has hit you on - not under - your cheekbones,’ believes Mary Greenwell.

• Like many make-up artists, Maggie Hunt likes to ‘double-blush’, first applying one layer of blush, then powder, then blushing again: ‘It helps the colour stay put.’

• Shu Uemura’s resident make-up artist Andrea says that in summer, older women should avoid powder blusher: ‘It can look dusty. Instead, try rubbing some lipstick into your cheeks, which gives a much more natural result.’

• Says Kevyn Aucoin: ‘Over-blushing can always be corrected by blending in a little powder.’

Mary Greenwell: ‘Blush is the one piece of make-up that you’ll never have to change. Stick with a blush that adds the right healthy glow and change the colour of eyes and lips.’

• Top American make-up artist Rex advises using a blusher brush with white bristles, to help you tell if you’re overdoing the colour: ‘If your brush suddenly looks too pink, your cheeks will, too.’

The Contour Controversy

Should you shape your face using darker powder to disguise chubby cheeks or double chins? Opinions vary. Bobbi Brown thinks it’s better to play up your good points rather than try to cover up your flaws. But Maggie Hunt, who every year teaches hundreds of women how to make the most of their looks, does believe in contouring: ‘I use a face shaper - a matte brown one - to help minimise double chins, chubby cheeks and high and narrow foreheads. Choose a shade of powder that’s just a darker version of your own skin tone and brush it onto the heavy areas. If your forehead is too high, put a soft brown powder around the hairline.’

Lipstick Tips from the Pros (same source as above)

• If chapped lips are a problem, make-up artist Kevyn Aucoin suggests: ‘Apply Vaseline and then buff with a baby’s toothbrush to get rid of dry skin.’

• How can you achieve lip colour that goes the distance? Bobbi Brown says it’s all in the preparation: ‘Apply a good lip balm and let it absorb thoroughly before applying lipstick - if your lips are dry or coated with waxy lip balm, your lipstick won’t perform well. Build up a depth of colour by applying lipstick, then blotting it with a tissue to leave a stain on your lips. Repeating these steps before applying a final coat should give you a deeper, longer-lasting result.’

• ‘Lip liner gives the mouth definition and helps lipstick stay on longer,’ says Mary Greenwell. ‘You can correct lips and make them bigger with a lip pencil. You don’t need a different colour for each lipstick; just use a basic neutral colour a few tones darker than your natural lip colour.’ On black women’s lips, Mary sometimes uses a brown eye pencil as lip liner.

• Veteran make-up artist Wayne Massarelli (who lends his skills to movies, TV and still photography) has another technique to help lipstick stay put: ‘Smooth foundation over the edges of your lips, especially if you intend to accentuate the fullness of your lips with your lip liner. Then use whatever translucent powder you ordinarily use to set your foundation; take a small brush and apply a little of the powder to your lips to set the line. This stops bleeding and feathering.’ Alternatively, BeneFit Cosmetics Lip Plump acts like foundation for lips, helping lipstick stay put and actually giving the appearance of fuller, softer lips.

• Make-up artist Jeanine Lobell, creator of her own range of cosmetics, Stila, creates a bee-sting pout by applying a rosy-brown lipstick, then dabbing a bit of concealer in the middle of the bottom lip. ‘It lights the lipstick one shade in the centre, and makes lips look bigger.’

• Scared of dark lip shades? Look for transparents, sheers or stains, recommends Mary Greenwell: ‘The sheer formula allows darker colours to be worn by women who usually feel they are too strong, and it also makes for quick and easy application.’

Lis Williams, Revlon’s in-house make-up expert, advises: ‘Dark colours make lips look smaller; a light colour will expand the mouth.’

Eye Makeup Tips from the Pros (same source)

• More advice from Mary Greenwell: ‘Grey-brown eyeshadows suit all skin types, from the very light to the very dark.’

Laura Geller advises women to turbo-charge the impact of a daytime eyeshadow for night by moistening the sponge applicator. This makes the colour go on darker, deeper and bolder.

Kevyn Aucoin says: ‘Depending on how you use it, eyeliner [liquid or pencil] can make the eyes appear larger or smaller. It’s not always necessary to line top and bottom lashes - in fact, I rarely do, unless I’m doing a very dramatic evening look. Lining just the top lashes opens up the whole eye area and the eyes, and the eye make-up gets more definition. Another way to open up the eyes is to line the lower rims with white eyeliner.’ (Yves Saint Laurent make one.)

• Like kissing, using liquid eyeliner is an art nobody ever teaches you. If you avoid liquid eyeliner simply because your hands aren’t steady, Chanel’s make-up maestro has the secret of shake-free eyelining: put your mirror on the table and bend over it. Now rest your arm on the table and draw, as close to the lashes as possible and as thickly or thinly as you prefer. No more shaky lines or squinting.

• Make-up artists use ‘layering’ techniques to stop cosmetics from sliding off the face and disappearing. For eyes, that means fixing pencil liner with a line of powder shadow over it. ‘Really work an eye pencil into the roots of lashes,’ encourages Mary Greenwell. ‘It gives the optical illusion of longer lashes.’ ‘There’s nothing worse than seeing white space between the lashes and liner.’

• As the weather heats up, put your eye (and lip) pencils in the freezer for a few minutes, before sharpening them. In cold weather, pencils get too hard - and can drag. Max Factor’s movie make-up artist Bob Mills advises: ‘So that eyeliner pencil glides on smoothly, soften the point before use with a blast of warm air from a hairdryer.’

More secrets from the Pros - Mascaras

Mary Greenwell warns blondes off black mascara (and liner): ‘They create Barbie-doll type lashes. Use brown, especially for day.’

Barbara Daly, creator of the Colourings range for The Body Shop, advises: ‘To apply mascara to your upper lashes, keep your head straight but hold the mirror at chin level. This means you’ll be looking down into the mirror, so that when you start to sweep the brush from root to tip, you’ll be able to see the whole length of the lashes. It also prevents the smudging that can happen if you open your eyes while the mascara is wet.’

• If mascara’s too runny, don’t waste money by throwing it out. Mary Greenwell advises leaving it open overnight, to dry out a bit.

• If mascara smuts often end up on your cheeks, try applying it to top lashes only, and use a soft brown/charcoal/grey pencil underneath your eyes.

The Secrets of Eyelash Curlers...

Some models and make-up artists (unlike Bobbi Brown) wouldn’t be without them - but eyelash curlers are infernal contraptions until you get the hang of them. Used properly, they can make your lashes look twice as long.

• Do invest in a good curler; it’s worth the investment; cheap metal curlers can actually cut your lashes. Tweezerman’s is one of the new high-tech curlers and the rave fave of those in the know. It has non-stick silicon pads which gently curl lashes, rather than ‘crimping’ them.

• Don’t use the curlers after you’ve applied your mascara; mascara can stick to the curler and the lashes get tugged out when you release it.

• Do clean the curler, especially the pad, preferably after each use with a cotton square and alcohol.

• Don’t pull with the curler clamped down, or you’ll yank lashes out.

• Do replace the curler if the rubber starts to crack.

• Do try the double-squeeze method: place the open curler near the upper lash roots, and arrange your lashes between the two rims. Squeeze gently for five seconds. Release the curler, and move it slightly towards the mid-lash area, then repeat the process. The effect is a beautifully rounded curl.

Faking It

False eyelashes as daywear have had their day. (For now.) But some women still like to wear them at night, for high drama. You can buy them either in strips, or as little clusters, packaged with their own, rubber cement-like glue that ensures painless removal (with a little tugging). International make-up artist Chris Colbeck first applies glue to the tip of a lash cluster, from the tube. Then, with tweezers, he nestles only one small cluster of false lashes into the real eyelashes just at the outside corner of the eye. ‘Often, that’s all a woman needs.’ For a fuller effect, he places clusters closely together, along the natural lash line.

Strip lashes can be trickier, and should first be cut to fit. Then glue the band; place the strip on the lid just above the real lashes; anchor it first in the middle, then at the edges. Applying mascara to natural and false lashes ‘fuses’ them for a more natural result. ‘And eyeliner can fill any gap between the two,’ adds Chris.

Makeup Artist Linda Cantello's beauty secrets (from www.telegraph.co.uk)

Saving face: "A good skincare regime is essential, at any age," Cantello says. "Use the best quality products for your skin type that you can afford. Drink lots of water, too. I see a big difference in models' skin when they aren't drinking enough water - and when they are smoking too much or eating badly."

Wake-up call: "When you're looking run down, just apply a tiny bit of blush. Even if you're doing a non-blush look, a little colour really wakes you up. Curling the eyelashes also makes a huge difference."

Testing, testing: "It's easy to stick to the same thing for ages, and miss out on the latest innovations. Experiment with new products that make your skin look amazing, instead of covering it up."

Trade Secrets

Sharon Dowsett, make-up artist: ''When it comes to beauty looks that last, the old school smoky eyes are always a winner. I pile on plenty of kohl and mascara and to look really healthy I use the Guerlain's duo matt and shine bronzer. Body Shop also do brilliant eye shimmers that act as a highlighter on their own but then give a really good intense colour if you put them over a shade that you already have on. It's like day-to-night make-up. Dust over with Benefit's Get Even powder and add a dash of its gorgeous brightly coloured lip gloss and you're there.''

Val Garland, make-up artist: ''YSL mascara is perfect for any occasion - it creates lovely long eyelashes and it comes in a gorgeous gold canister. I love the Lancome Juicy Tubes too. They look great and taste delicious and you can choose one for every mood. To really glam it up I always go for Dior Addict red lipstick and I love Chanel's Les 4 Ombres sparkly eye colours. My really hot tip for gorgeous skin is an oxygen or lymphatic drainage facial from Edith Williams, at 36 Beauchamp Place. But if you can't afford that, put on an SK2 hydrating mask an hour before you go out. You look like Hannibal Lecter while it's on but it's just brilliant. It's wonderful to get yourself on track for a big date or something the next day.''

Netia Hibbert, make-up artist: ''My make-up wish list includes the Beyond Long by Prescriptives - nothing gives you better lashes.
For foundation go for Color I.D from Lancome - it is a miracle worker if you use a brush to apply it, as fingers can redden the skin and make it look angry. For under the eyes, I'm a huge fan of Clinique's Airbrush Concealer - put it over the eye and onto the browbone so the highlight in it will give you a big bright party eye.
Armani eyeshadows come in beautiful colours and last forever and the best lipgloss is Guerlain's Kiss Gloss.
For blusher, Nars Orgasm works on everyone if applied on the apple of the cheeks.''

For a lesson with Netia on how to look your best, using the best products to suit you, call Hari's salon, 305 Brompton Road, London SW3. 020 7581 5211 - surely the best Christmas idea for the girl who has everything.
www.netiahibbert.com

Mary Greenwell, make-up artist: ''Smother yourself in Oil of Olay's Total Effects body lotion and then spray on the Dior Addict scent. It's so beautiful and really sexy. Eyebrows are very clean cut at the moment, and Chanel can always be relied upon for plenty of stunning colours. I love the berry-coloured stains for the lips. They give any look a glamorous, polished finish. In fact, even on their own they are stunning.''

Miranda Joyce, make-up artist: ''MAC's Strobe Cream is my most essential product. It's excellent for giving a slightly iridescent highlight along the cheekbones. I like experimenting with all the fresh, bright colours available at the moment. It's fun to wear bright blue on the eyes, say, and then a candy pink on the lips. Red lips seem so standard, but then for real old-style glamour you can't really do without it. If you aren't sure about wearing really bright colours, just use a bright green eyeliner, or even a white one, along the inside of the eye, above your eyelashes. It makes you look really fresh and sparkly.''

Jon Mort, Versace's UK make-up artist: ''One of my best tricks is to use a highlighter - traditionally used to define the corner of the eye and just below the brow - very lightly along the edge of the upper lip line. It creates the illusion of a much fuller lip. I also like to use skin illuminators instead of proper blushers, but in the same place - just under the cheekbone. It creates a dewy brightness and defines the facial structure but gives a much more natural finish than artificial bold blusher.''
