As the Hollywood success story goes, “I was shopping at a store in St. Martin in October of 2000. Unbeknown to me, the store had just opened and there was a casting session for potential models to represent the island at a competition in Paris. The moment I walked in, I was pushed to the table to sign up, and before I knew it, measuring tapes were all over me and I am being asked questions about being available to fly to Paris and all that. It all happened so quickly, before I knew it, it was December and I was in Paris strutting my stuff down a runway at the Moulin Rouge, for the first time in my life; I couldn’t believe it. My natural given talent kicked in and helped me secure second place, which resulted in me being awarded a three-year contract with Karin Models, and the rest as they say is history. Who knew that a skinny little girl, who spent most of her childhood between rural counties would grow up to fill the pages of magazines all over the world and strut the runway worldwide clothed in wears by some of the world’s top designers.”

Only thing is this isn’t a Hollywood story, but rather the real life story of St. Lucian born Mala Bryan Alexander. A former Vieux Fort Comprehensive Secondary School beauty who took time out of her busy summer schedule to chat with NSL’s Ted Polius at Bryant Park.

Which parent do you attribute your various physical attributes to?

It is kind off like a split between both; my dad gave me his long legs and limbs, and I have my mom's lips and nose.

Tell us some of the various designers you have had the pleasure of working with?

Well let's see...

Runway: Fendi, La Perla, Just Cavalli, Tommy Hilfiger. Saks 5th Ave, Serena Williams, Nike, etc…

Catalog: Macy's West, Macy's Richies, Macy's Burdines, Sears, Hechts, Filenes

Editorials: Source, Yes! (Holland), Loaded (London), German Max(Germany) Suede, Essence, Esquire, Tropical (St.Barths)

Do you ever get to keep the stuff or get free stuff from the various companies you have worked for?

Sometimes, like when I do runways I get clothes as payment. I did a commercial for American Eagle once and we got tons of clothes. I got a whole new wardrobe, that was one of my best jobs ever.

Do you see your model career as a launching pad for other avenues?

Yeah I hope, because although I do enjoy what I do, I really want to work in the tourism industry. Modeling helps me in achieving that goal as I get to travel which provides me with the opportunities to learn different cultures and be exposed to different walks of life.

Has your model career taken you abroad, if so which destination would you say is your favorite and why?

Abroad I have been to Paris and Morocco. No favorites yet, Morocco was beautiful but scary. While shopping in Morocco the people followed us everywhere, into stores and all. They seem hungry for money, I don’t mean to sound insensitive, but some of them just made me uncomfortable. If you stopped to ask someone a question some how that gets translated into that you just hired him to be your guide for the day. It worked out well sometimes but at times it was really irritating. And of course you have to pay them and if you take a picture that meant more money too and in Paris I was by myself so I really did not get to enjoy it.

What are some of things that a young person trying to get into the business should look out for and avoid?

At all cost avoid photographers that want to try nudity and agencies that ask for money. Whenever I meet a photographer who wants to test me, the first thing I tell them is to book me through my agency. If they don't want to, I know they aren't serious. I have, on occasion made the mistake of booking jobs on the side and not gotten paid in full for them and that sucks, that's one of the reasons the agency is there - to get your moneys for you. I am too soft to do it myself.

As far as your model career is concern what won’t you do???

Full nudity and tobacco ads. Topless maybe, if it is tastefully done. Playboy once offered $25,000 for the pictures and $100,000 for the year of publicity but I had to say no. That easily is the greatest offer I have ever received, but I have a little sister who really looks up to me, so I have to pick and choose my jobs well.

What do you find sexy about a man or woman?

Let me look at my fiancée and see, on a man, his eyes. I love long eyelashes and he’s got that, my sister too, tall and well built but not too muscular, and juicy lips nice and pink [laughs]. On a woman I like a well shaped butt, firm legs, and a nice stomach not necessarily flat but no tires. And I like women that take good care of their hair, no matter how ugly people think you are once your hair looks good, it helps. Oh yeah and I like boobs, not A cups though, B through DD, and real ones too!

What was you first professional gig as a model and how different is it in contrast to your last gig, as far as professional growth?

My very first gig was a runway show; my God I was dancing on that runway.

But now I do the right thing, I use those legs of mine to the fullest and as far as professional growth, I usually don't say this but I am damn proud of myself.

Do you still get nervous going on the runway or performing for the camera? If so, how do you get through that fear?

Of course every time but once I get out there I am in Heaven. I feel like this belongs to me, I belong out there and I will work. It feels good when I know that my people are out there watching me, supporting me. I pretend that I am doing a show at home for them, so it is fun.

How did your parents feel when they saw your first magazine appearance?

My mom blushes every time she sees me in a magazine and my dad had to let the whole of Vieux Fort know. I wish he wouldn’t, seeing how I am very shy person.

How is it that you are saying that you are shy when your profession requires you to be the exact opposite - bold, extraverted, confident?

I know, I still really can't cope too well, but it is a challenge and I love challenges. It still works against me, sometimes it takes me a while to get comfortable for the photographer, but once I get used to whatever situation I am in, I get loose and nothing can stop me. I try to think of all the haters and say this is for them! [laughs]

Any one you still hope to work with, in terms of magazines or designers?

I am only getting started

Is there anyone who made you feel bad or discourages you that you would like to say, “Hey look at me now!”

All the haters know themselves, I just want to let them know they are the ones giving me the courage to go on.

I like her, her look is very commercial in the pictures though. I would like to see her do high fashion. She has the height and the look.

This girl is absolutely gorgeous. I'd love to see her do big things.
