Marc Jacobs Bags-Classy or Trendy?

"a bad bag on a cool girl is a cool bag." -marc jacobs

also, i detest the word "classy."

it conjures images of cheap nail salons, five inch heels worn to the grocery store and kimora lee simmons.

  "Classy" means something entirely different to me but maybe your vision is what the word has come to mean. "Classy" to me is understated and chic - think Jackie O or Grace Kelly.

trendy for sure ! and there are really only a few houses who can claim to have true classics in their repertoire

It depends who you are, how you wear it, what you wear it with, and which bag in particular. :D

...that's not classy, that's elegance....

none of those are classy though. nouveau riche and skeezy maybe.

I don't think many of Marc Jacobs bags are classic(I'm assuming you meant classic? as in.. never will go out of style?)... his most "classic" bag is the Venetia, IMO

"classy" is a word i've most commonly heard out of people's mouths who have no class at all.

to describe grace kelly or jackie kennedy, i might ust graceful or elegant, and of course, i would say they have class...but i'd never call them "classy." it's just a tacky word, imho.

i agree with jan. classy and elegant are not that far off, btw.

might i suggest that this thread offers a choice based on a false bifurcation. classic vs. trendy, or classy vs. tasteless. something along those lines. classy vs. trendy is kind of a false dilemma. you can be classy and trendy at the same time. you would just change trends but do so tastefully.

why are they boring?

are they not "classy" enough for you? lmao.

cheeky
downtown
ironic

are the 3 adjectives that come to my mind.

and yes, downtown is an adjective.

I think if you are worried about any bag being trendy and not liking that...then the only bags you can get is a Hermes bag....those are pretty much the only classic staple bags forever and ever at least until someone can trump the birkin, hermes top spot

If we are talking about Marc Jacobs mainline bags as in not Marc by MJ then yes- they are very boring for me. The design is nothing amazing and there's nothing to set them apart...just a personal opinion...they just don't do anything for me.

i think his designs for his marc jacobs line are indeed, classy. they are based mainly on updated vintage designs, and aren't so trendy they look awful out of season. his designs such as the venetia, the grace (named after grace kelly ), the stam, and kirsten, among others are chic enough to fit into almost any wardrobe, yet go effortlessly in and out of seasonal garb. the colors he chooses are generally not in your face, but subdued offbeat hues of what are usually used in handbag lines. for example, with the stam, yes black white and brown are standard colors, but MJ has gone off the well worn road and created neutral variations of the colors and textures, such as taupe, putty, cream and ivory.

when speaking soley on marc jacobs own designs, they are simple enough to carry during the day or at night, casually or dressed up and in the spring as well as in winter.

in contrast, i would say his designs for LV are trendy, as they go in and out of style like the lastest hair color.

the only thing that contradicts my last two statements are those women who fall in love with the designs solely for design sake and take the bag for what it is because they love IT. then the trend factor does not matter although, in some eyes, it may not be denotative of "classiness".

i also think (MTCW) the topic starter should have created a definate definition of what classy and trendy are to them and in regards to this thread

Hahaha ok yes..when I said classy I meant elegant etc. More along the lines of Jackie O or grace kelly. When I think class I don't think Kimora  Just wondering if people think of MJ bags as something that will go out of style or something that one can keep over a course of many many years. Thanks for all the replies. Everyone helped a lot!

i think some are classic.

i love his quilted work because it looks fresh and modern, and not boring and grandma.
