“We wanted it to be rich and luxe,” said Georgina Chapman of Marchesa’s pre-fall collection, for which she and Keren Craig looked at Byzantine art and Fabergé eggs to get in the spirit of opulence. Mission accomplished on gowns featuring layered, embroidered tulle skirts and a black off-shoulder cocktail dress with Baroque gold embroidery.
The color pairings of black and gold, navy and silver, and white and crimson kept the look festive but elegant. For all the lavish decoration, the silhouettes were surprisingly easy — so much so that some of the collection’s highlights were gowns based on caftans.
