I didnt find any other threads dedicated to his art.. Anyone else a fan? I would post some pics but Im on a super secure library computer and I cant even copy links.

in high school we had project in which we had to paint our lockers w/ the theme 'kistch.' i covered mine in mark ryden paintings w/ a added twist of morphing the characters into bathroom objects: baby as a plunger, 'sputnik' as a electric toothbrush, jesus in the rocket as a toothpaste container, hula girl as a kleenex box...

i don't really like mark ryden. i think he is a very good painter, he uses paint very well, but i find the subject matter kind of contrived. i saw his newest show at the art center in pasadena, and i really wasn't blown away by it. some are huge and they look amazing in person, but it's really not something i'd hang in my home, which ultimately makes or breaks things i'm on the fence about.

Like some of his work as long as it's not too creepy or suggestive. Wouldn't hang it in my home either. Read somewhere that he uses old toys/dolls for inspiration?

i am seriously bored by ryden. i think his work is mostly commercially orientated which i can understand but it definitely lacks a force for me...
it's just this mixture of shocking-cute that appeals to teenagers all over the world:p

Some of his work I like, some I find a little too disturbing.

i agree with you, anna...i think he appeals to a demographic that i'm not part of.

I enjoy the kitsch/retro images which match some vintage toys I collect for my daughter :p I used 'just the girls' painting for a canvas print in her room (edited out the cigarette  )

^Just to clarify the message above-> one of the characters in the painting is smoking a cigarette which I edited out for my daughter :) This is the original image:

Artists with similar inspirations -> (for my daughter) I like Lisa Petrucci’s kiddle doll paintings:

Within the same genre-> Camille Rose Garcia—whom I actually prefer over mark ryden:

That painting by Garcia is sick, thanks for suggesting her work.

I think if I hung any of Rydens work in my home, it would freak people out. But maybe in a studio or something. Regardless, I find a lot of his stuff interesting.

i really like camille rose garcia! i don't really put her in the same school as ryden though. they evoke totally different feelings for me. meaning that ryden doesn't really evoke anything in me (except maybe just general ennui), and i actually like garcia's work.

I didn't notice the Camille Rose Garcia posts here - I actually started a thread on her last night  I do like some of Mark Ryden's work although I do understand why some don't, and I like the stories behind some of the art.

i generally like his work. it's the sort of painting i've never been able to do myself, intricacy...AHHH
but i think the ideas and compositions are compelling, i also enjoy when fine artists portray cultural icons, it somehow seems less specific and elite

i like some of his work, but others just scream of goth high school students. I really like his pieces w/ Lincoln for some reason

Sometimes his paintings make me frightened but Ryden has his own style, his pictures are original and unique. I've read an article about him in polish magazine "Fashion". Except the text there was many pics and they made me feel amazed! It is impossible not to notice and remember his art!
I love that pic:
