I absolutely adore mary janes  always have done...especially black ones, sometimes where the strap is on the bridge of the foot can really make or break it for me.

i like em too. christian louboutin made on with criss cross straps that i LOVE

i have a HUGE & timeless thing for both mary janes and t-straps..
faves are the classic 'charactere' dance mary janes, they are classic, they are non-fashion and one can actually DANCE wearing them

Hello!

so what do we think about this trend the entire fashion industry seems to be conspiring to sell us?

Are we buying it?

Do you like it?

Let me know... :flower:

^ welcome back!! 🥲

.. ngl, these days I cringe every time I'm super late in the morning and resort to Mary Janes (because they're a no brainer, I know they'll more or less match with whatever I'm wearing and if I need to run for my life/squeeze myself into a train in approximately 80 seconds, it ain't happening in heels! 😅).

I always loved them (grew up obsessed with the MJ ones from Fall 2001), but went back to them exactly two years ago because I needed something a bit more formal for work but that still allowed me to move.. I got a pair from Carel with a tiny bit of heel, flat ones from Lemaire and another one from some random brand.. it was hard to find them exactly how I wanted cause there weren't that many options available. Fast forward to 2024, it's a freakin' contagion! every time I go to this little park for lunch, I spot at least 20 pairs in the span of 1 hour. It's a uniform and I know some people are fine with seeing someone dressed exactly like them (coughrickowensfanscough) but not me nuh uh, I'm not matching shoes with anyone. Can't explain. But this is what my nightmares look like.

You know s*it's hit the fan the moment there's a gross mesh version of a shoe. So yeah, I'm putting my pairs away from my reach for the summer (next to the now also fashion victim-looking Sambas 🤣) and may or may not take them out again in 5 years. I'll just stick to laceup flats, hereu sandals and trying to find the pair of heeled derbys that apparently only exists in my head.

I'm kinda obsessed with Mary Janes since the 00s and was looking for the perfect kitten heel pair with a T-strap for the last couple of years (my 00s ones didn't stand the test of time, unfortunately). Mary Janes are definitely not easy shoes to design. The only perfect pairs were done over 20 years ago and they are now vintage Pradas and Miu Mius, which sadly I can never find in my size. Nearly perfect ones nowadays are done by The Row (particularly the Cyd model) and Celine, but I honestly wouldn't dare to pay that amount for a pair that is not perfect, which is why I resorted to Zara (with a very guilty conscience, since I avoid fast fashion), but I can't say I'm sad with my purchase, as they look very high end.

The other pairs I really love since the start of last year are the mesh Alaïas, I think they are a great spin to the shoe style, very sexy and you can literally wear them with everything, elevating any look (and being comfy). However, I do hate that everyone is wearing them nowadays, since there is nothing I loathe more than clones, but there's a reason for it and it's not just hype, they are THAT pretty and effortless to style.

I can see the appeal of them as a casual/business casual shoe but to me the flat ones from The Row just look like my school shoes from Catholic school. A lot depends on the shoe colour and the placement of the strap, and not many brands get it right.

Absolutely!!! Additionally, I think the openings in the shoes and their shape also make a big difference, besides the thickness of the strap and the toe shape (I prefer them square toe or pointy, never round). I don't like those Mary Janes from The Row either, but I do like the T-strap Cyd model. However, I wish they were a bit more open in the sides or were slingbacks instead.
