Vogue Portugal November 2024 : The Icons Issue

I really love the Franca cover, closely followed by Prince cover as a second favourite, both are quite stunning although the rest also works in the context of Vogue Portugal. I respect that they have their distinct direction and are staying true to it.

So creative. I really enjoy all of them, each giving a different feeling.

Ehhh I'm not so impressed.

I like Twiggy. The Dolly Parton cover sucks, I don't even think I'd give that a "like" if it was an Instagram post, let alone buy it as a cover. The Bette Davis and Prince covers I don't get either of those people from those images. The Franca cover, however, is a successful example of what the Bette and Prince covers tried to do. The homage is subtle but the reference is recognizable without the caption cluing me in.

@EDEN21 I think they're trying for an early, early career Bette Davis, which is an interesting choice.

Now that you mention, I do see the young, "Of Human Bondage" era Bette in the makeup and the emphasis on the big eyes and delicate mouth, but my first thought when I saw that cover wasn't "it's giving Bette Davis," rather I thought of Pat McGrath's makeup for 2000s Dior. Which in itself was obviously inspired by Old Hollywood movie stars like Bette. I guess I just needed something less minimalistic to really see Bette specifically, and not just any Old Hollywood actress with the stamped-on makeup of that era.

TWIGGY as TWIGGY.
Can't get more iconic than that.

The Franca cover? Very well done and necessary.
The buttons as Dolly on Fava? Insufficient.

This edition is such a clump of Pinterest mess. Boring "The ... Issue" every month then they slap images that don't connect to each other.
