The Australian model and musician on walking for Prada, perpetual jet lag and afternoons spent in Paris.
What was your reaction when you found out Prada wanted you to walk exclusively for them for Fall 2016?
Serious shock. To even be considered to walk for a brand as iconic as Prada was a serious trip. I try to not get too excited about [being one of their] options and keep my head on about the possibility of the job not confirming, but it was so hard not to get completely over excited when I found out.
What would people be most surprised to know about being a model?
That you don't get to keep all the clothes!
What’s the most enjoyable aspect of what you do?
I love being a part of the creative process and getting to create beautiful art with incredibly inspiring people.
What's the most challenging aspect of what you do?
Aside from the early call times, long days and living in a perpetual state of jetlag—the competitiveness and the capriciousness. This industry can be so fickle so I think it's really important to remember who you are.
Your mum was a model—what advice did she give you about modelling when you were starting out?
To remember who I am and to never take myself too seriously.
What's your favourite way to kill time on set and backstage at shows?
On long castings days I always carry a book. I read A Little Life by Hanya Yanighara while I was last in Milan. I always like to try to make friends backstage. Things can be a bit tense and the vibe is always better if we can have a little dance in the line-up and get psyched up for the walk.
In a parallel universe where you weren't modelling and making music, what would you be doing?
I want to study Art History and Development Studies at University.
Who or what are your musical influences?
Laura Marling, David Bowie, Lana Del Rey and Joni Mitchell are my long-term influences. Recently I've been listening to a lot of vocal-led electronic music like Halsey and Melanie Martinez. I just discovered Martinez's album Cry Baby and it has seriously good vibes.
Who are your favourite fashion designers?
Hedi Slimane is my all-time favourite designer—I think that he is an absolute genius. I love LA brand Reformation. It's really affordable and I can buy their clothes with a clean conscience about their environmental impact.
What's the best cure for a creative block?
Taking the pressure off. Being in nature and literally putting your feet back on the ground.
Can you talk us through how you style your fringe each morning?
I have to make sure to comb it forward so that it dries in the right shape. If it dries in the wrong shape I'm screwed and I have to wash my hair again.
What's the one beauty product you're never without?
Lip balm! I almost always carry perfume with me—I've just started wearing Poison Girl by Dior and I'm obsessed.
What's your favourite way to spend a day off?
I'd sleep in, do yoga or pilates, have a long lazy lunch with friends, and then it would depend on the city I'm in. If I were in Paris I'd spend it in a gallery or museum, like the Musée d'Orsay; in New York I like just walking around the city; and in Sydney you'll probably find me at Gordon's Bay.
What's a skill you'd like to learn?
I'd love to learn how use [digital audio software] Logic Pro so that I can write electronic music! I'm also on my way to learning how to hold a handstand which is pretty damn exciting.
What do you miss most about home when you're away?
My family—I really miss hanging out with my mum and playing with my dog. Family is really important to me and living far away from them is difficult sometimes. But it makes me appreciate the time we do get together a lot more.
