Mei Hui Liu runs a shop called Victim. On Fashion Street, no less. Since moving to London four years ago from Taiwan, she's sold her customised Victorian-influenced vintage creations. She loves : 'London's trashy vintage cool. In Asia, everyone compares prices of their top, whoever's paid more is the coolest. Here, it's more like "I got this for 50p at a charity shop."'

Shopkeeper by day, at night Mei Hui's a committed electroclash scene regular, haunting Nag Nag Nag, The c*ck and Trash. Her self-designed outfits plus quiff and block eye make-up ensure everyone knows her. She knows everything : 'Electro really brings people together. You can go to a certain place and know you'll meet up, it's a little community.'

Electroclash may have been a commercial flop when it came to the music, but the dressed-up club scene it spawned is thriving - and that spirit is refelected in the contents Victim. Mei Hui's self-made designs are stocked alongside paint-splattered designs from boy-about-town Philip Normal plus records by neo-folkie, Patrick Wolf, who sang at Victim's last show. 'I involve all my friends in what i do,' says Mei Hui, 'then work is fun.' Mei Hui Lui : making electroclash more community-minded.

I love her work and what i've seen so far and was wondering if anyone has heard of her or likes her stuff too. Also has anyone here ever been to her store Victim ? & does anyone know if it's still open?

She has a website :

Some of her Pieces from Spring/Summer 2003 & Autumn/Winter 03/04

I'm really interested to see what she's doing now, but it's hard to get any insight on her. Anyone know of anything?

I love Mei Hui, her stuff is so ronatic but rebelious.

May be she is into electro, but her clothes are not really electro at all.

I think it's great she is friends with patrick wolf. ^_^

aww Mei is the cutest thing EVER
she was one of my teachers at fash school

I like Mei Hui too. I love how she keeps the imperfections of the pieces she re-interprets in tact. She,like a Jurgi Persoons or Jessica Ogden, emphasise the beauty of which clothes actually go through in time. I think that's the best way to describe what she does.

I think she's found it quite difficult though - store buyers want to be able to buy 5 or 6 or the best pieces from a collection like this, but because all of Mei-hui's pieces are one-offs, they're unable to order as they normally would.

As much as I like the final creations she produces, I do find the whole "vintage customising" thing a bit of a cop-out. Ok for students, but not for serious designers. If she could only make these pieces from scratch, and be able to produce them, even in tiny limited-edition quantities she'd find much greater commercial success.

never heard of her...or 'electroclash'...
but i love her vivienne westwood boots...

i really enjoy her work. to me,she's not like that whole re-working trend....she truly re-interprets,re-imagine's everything she does.
