MDC JUNE 2018
'Japan's Defining Faces Cast Their Spell'
Ph: Bjarne x Takata
Stylist: Tsuyoshi Noguchi
Hair/Makeup: Kamo

The Japanese have always appeared like they are light-years ahead in sartorial taste (we’ll leave technology out of this) and the latest MDC original gives proof to the theory with photographers Bjarne x Takata showing the subtle mystery the island country embodies. One of Japan’s top stylistic minds, Tsuyoshi Noguchi pulls wiccan-ish selects from Yohji Yamamoto and Noir Kei Ninomiya while models Miki Ehara and Tsugumi Nakamura enchantingly frolic through the sand dunes. Take a cinematic journey away from the familiar city setting.

too bad that these days booking Dior and Hèrmes doesnt mean as much as in the old days… i really want her to have Chiharu-level success!

Agreed. I'm highly disappointed that Miki's career didn't skyrocket after her LV exclusive.

While she's got the interest/approval from Brokaw, Lee, Del Moro & Valentini, to name a few - she needs a broader support system from more casting directors. Right not Brokaw has checked out, Del Moro & Valentini shows a bit of loyalty but nothing beyond the runway IIRC. Michelle Lee is in the same boat, but she is still Miki's biggest ally. Lee needs to book her in her projects, whatever that may be, utilise her.

Another big concern is her management. Not sure if NYC isn't receptive of Miki or this is on DNA's shoulders. Have she even visit NYC and start doing some tests and gosees to feel how's it like? Who are her agent/booker there? The same for Viva Paris. Do they not believe in her? Realise the full potential of Miki? Have they given up and pushed other girls ahead of Miki??? What about Donna Models - are they the culprit of handling Miki's career, and to be more local oriented (in spite of doing a decent job with her workload for Japan), and not fully invest her in Western markets? Donna, mother agency, still have the last words right? Pulling the strings... IDK, someone please clarify.

This also goes back to Miki herself. What are her aspirations and goals. Always curious and important to know this about new models. How does she feel? Simply grateful and just doing the job as it comes... or should she seek/ask her managements for that big push, that breakthrough moment, that next step. True it's still relatively early in Miki's career. But she's undeniably special (could be said about the hundreds of models in the industry), and that's the confusing and frustrated part. Maybe with more time and development, we could see more options and a clearer pathway for her.

Lastly, not sure if I buy "Miki's look just isn't in right now"... could be true, maybe not. Then again, theoretically, with a strong supporter like Brokaw/Lee/Del Moro, things could still change dramatically if they book her in xyz projects, etc. Sometimes all it take is a major individual to change a model's career. Who are these photogs/editors/designers that love Miki regardless? Perhaps her managements needs to reevaluate their priority and start focusing on Miki.

Okay. Her career isn't that bad. It isn't. Japan's doing great. It's DNA/Viva and the inside folks that seems to be the letdown.

Thank you. Miki belongs there precisely of what I've said above. Obsessed and deserved better.
