Where Do The Models Go After The Shows?
When the collections finally come to a close, there is a detectable quiet in the fashion world, when you might assume that the models take some well-earned rest. Milly Simmonds, a show-seasoned model who has previously walked for Burberry, Céline, Mulberry and Paul Smith, told us that it is, in fact, one of the busiest times of the year for models looking for new work.
"After the fashion shows, it's the busiest time for work, and the best time for models to go out to New York because that's where everything is," Simmonds told us as she arrived in New York for "campaign season" - the period when models meet new clients and casting directors. "Lots of models flock to New York before Christmas and in the run-up to Easter."
It's a busy schedule, but Simmonds still finds time to work out and visit her agency every day: "My agency organises everything and tells me where to go. They contact clients, casting directors, photographers and photography agencies, and set up meetings. The night before I find out what meetings I have the next day. Normally I go to about three meetings a day. It's great to meet new clients."
Although still frenetic, campaign season has a slightly slower pace than the drama of fashion month - and Simmonds knows only too well the cycle of adrenaline and fatigue that comes with walking in the shows.
"Of course it's so exciting doing a show for Burberry or Céline, the big names," she said - but admitted there are still plenty of worries on her mind, despite her catwalk experience. "If the shoes are horrible and I can't walk in them, it does scare me a little bit, but I know I can do it. Sometimes I'm so pumped up on adrenaline that nothing is going through my head, sometimes I'm thinking who's here, who's watching me? If I'm in Paris, and it's the last part of the season and I'm absolutely exhausted, then I don't think as much. But if it's the first few shows of the season and it's all fresh, then it's more of a rush."
Reflecting on her career so far in the industry, from first being scouted at the age of 16 to her Burberry campaign in 2011, shot by Mario Testino, Simmonds understands what it takes to be a model. She told us: "I think new models need motivation and drive. Everyone is different. For me, it helps having amazing and supportive friends and family who are always there. I know that when I go home they're going to be there and everything can be normal again. It helps having a supportive boyfriend - Matt Trethewey - who works in the industry."
And as for her advice to aspiring models?
"My advice would be to - and this sounds really cringe - but to follow your heart. Get advice, from your agent and friends and family, but do what you think is best. Don't put yourself under too much pressure because it is very easily done. Have a strong head, because it can easily go the wrong way. Most of all, be relaxed and enjoy it."
