oh come on, you've all been waiting for it

SHOPPING IN MINNEAPOLIS .. (ba ba BAAAAHHH)

Obviously, if one is a masochist they can hit up the USA's biggest indoor mall - The Mall of America

But, I think we shall throw some further suggestions out there. Calling all Minneapolis/St. Paul Residents!

First I'll start with Covered .. It's a little boutique right on the U of MN campus that sells pricey jeans. Then you can run across the streat to get recycled vintage clothing at Everyday People. These are two trendy/alright shops if you have a lot of money to waste haha.

Where's travolta? We need some actual good suggestions.

I like Heartbreaker in Uptown.

And hey - MoA has an H&M and Forever 21...so it's not that bad. (I would recommend the faint of heart to visit during the day some weekday. But if you did visit on the weekend you would reach your fill of seeing people wear crocs or flowered leggings....or crocs and flowered leggings...in about 15 minutes, if you're into that sort of thing.)

I struggle greatly with shopping here. I have always wanted to open a boutique that would carry marc by marc, apc, alice roi, lover etc. but people always say that there is no way that it would survive here (people would just not spend the money on these sorts of clothes). So with that said, I go to everyday people and h & m and order everything else online :) sometimes nordstrom can pull through in a bind... anyhoo, I abhore len druskin.

I am so glad someone started this thread.
do you think a younger minded boutique could work here?

Juliet....I don't know. St. Paul would be good for kitchsy, quirky clothing. Minneapolis is a college town, so there are peoplewho would wear Marc by Marc, etc...whether or not they have the money, is another question.

Why don't you start a survey? Go to the colleges, coffee shops, indie book and record stores and such, and find out. You could build a small website, asking what their annual (bi-annual, quarterly, monthly, whatever.) cothing budget is, and then decide from there.

Hey, if you get something opened up in the Cities, let me know! I'll scrimp my pennies together and do some shopping. :)

AHAH Luxury, I dare say I've even seen worse at MoA, hey.. I honestly don't mind shopping there if it wasn't for all the people induced anxiety attacks  I always hit up Metro Park for Joe's Jeans. I like walking into random stores. I got some really cute shoes at oh crap, I don't remember the store's name. Elyse Sewell just did their ad campaign though, oh shoot! I'll remember.

Juliet, I don't want to throw haphazardly into a business venture but in my humble opinion i think with the right marketing a boutique with m by mj, etc would work.. maybe as long as you had some lower priced things as well?

Hey. Been gone a while...but it was refreshing to read your responses... Years ago when I first moved here people told me that nobody here would every buy expensive jeans, now it seems almost standard.
I think if I can get the money together I would like to open something like creatures of comfort (in la.) or impulse (in seattle). I agree with pointup that people want something cheap as well, we could bring in topshop!

where would this work in MInneapolis?

MOA has an H&M now? Neat! I believe they also got a Sephora some time ago.
Geez, I haven't been there in such a long time. MOA always has tourists so it's not exactly my first choice shopping destination.

Juliet, head downtown near the Nicollet Mall area. They have a Neiman's and some other nice shops. (I think the Saks closed down a couple years back, but I'm not positive.)
Or you could go into the artsy district of St. Paul if you're willing to go indie and a little more on the affordable side.
(I don't really know the exact streets or anything, but there's a bookstore called Dreamhaven Books that is in a fabulous neighbourhood. They have a great, indie movie theatre, all sorts of fun shops and cafés....that'd be a wonderful place to go.) Anyway, Dreamhaven is at:
912 W Lake Street, Minneapolis MN 55408
You might want to go check out that area. (and drop by the bookstore; great books, friendly people. :))

Yes, MOA has a Sephora (Ridgedale has had one for even longer, so that wasn't a big deal.) MOA is just nice for those rare occasions when you need to hit up a lot of stores looking for something particular. Or if you need to go to H&M. But yes, too many tourists (and just too big for normal shopping excursions).

The Saks has been made into a Saks outlet, as I guess we couldn't support a full-on Saks.

hey im from winnipeg manitoba (canada) and im heading down to minneapolis tomorrow specifically for american apparel and some other brands you cant get in canada. Does anyone know if the american apparel shop has opened yet? Also does any shop carry the australian brand Lover? And any other shopping suggestions would be much appreciated (im looking for young mid-range hip labels with some expensive pieces mixed in)?

american apparel has yet to open. sorry. I wish that there was a store that carried Lover, but alas. Come back in five years when I have opened my boutique. :)

Juliet, please do! I think Edina has some boutiques, and there's Intoto... Uptown or NE would be good places to do it.

Also, I think American Apparel is opening this fall, in uptown.

'K, I've visited Minneapolis four(?) times and found several new haunts on each occasion... Intoto carries Ann Demeulemeester, Martin Margiela, Easton Pearson, Dries van Noten, A.F. Vandevorst and more, but you can imagine the prices, and there aren't sale racks... I was told they hold storewide sales every so often, and I missed the post-Thanksgiving one by mere weeks. -_- Local Motion is also of interest, carrying independent labels from across the country, with a focus on the titular local designers. And don't overlook the vintage shops, like Via's...

Plus Mpls.St.Paul Magazine provides an excellent directory

Has anyone been to 50th and France. I hear there is a Monique Lhuillier? I've been living at home for four months and have just returned; so, alas I haven't checked out anything in quite some time (and living two blocks from the 35W bridge now makes getting anywhere a hassle!)

I go to the MOA these days for my favourite store: Teavana! Now, watch out. The salespeople are on commission, and have a reputation of being rather seedy, but the tea is pure heaven.

Aw, I'm sad I have to work everyday this week, or I'd go check out the new American Apparell. Well, at least we finally got one! Thanks for the info. :)

I think that Monique Lhuillier is mostly wedding dresses... not sure though.

Other places to check out gh2 on hennepin, Pumpz at the Galleria for shoes, also at the Galleria Arafina and Ivy in uptown

One of my favorites Alfred’s Grand Petit Magasin closed :(

Do you guys have a MJ, Balenciaga, Givenchy, or Chanel store?

If not

What department store has the best bag selection for these designers?

I'm going there on US thanksgiving to buy a bag and some clothes and a coat etc. Also are there any good sales going on when im going?

Thanks!

booradley, I think the directory found here:

http://www.mspmag.com/style/shopping/35824.asp

would best answer your questions. Unfortunately the directory does not list, nor do I know, any stores which carry balenciaga, givency, or chanel? Atleast clothing.. I think that Neiman Marcus might be the best for that search? I don't know though!

I don't go to MOA very often, but I'm curious if Nordstrom Rack ever has great stuff.

I get jealous when people pick up gems at theirs. :( I wonder if it's worth it to hang around.
