I know that’s what I am thinking, too. It seems like she is doing it for her girl friend. I mean, what does she want that she isn’t already getting? More covers?
Isn’t it possible that if a model is very popular at the moment then that model will continue to be requested regardless of which agency she’s at? So if Next came to Mona and said we’ll charge a lower commission wouldn’t that be enough? Maybe I’m naive since I don’t understand the inner workings of agencies, but it seems they add the most value at the beginning of a model’s career when she needs visibility. Once she’s established is there really a need for an agency? Especially for the older models I wonder. Adriana Lima left CAA to go solo, and I’m wondering if this is a good move or does it not matter because at her stage everyone knows who she is and all of her bookings would be direct request anyways? Are the bookers actively doing anything for the older models or is it just a question of prestige to have them on their boards?
I don't think MT has reached a level where she can book jobs without an agent, and the quality of her management is still important for her career advancement.
Right, but practically speaking, what is the real benefit of Elite worldwide versus Next, surely they must have similar networks. I could understand the difference between a 1st tier modeling agency in NY and some podunk agency in a third tier market, but is there really a big difference between Elite and Next for a model of her caliber? Kaia went from IMG to DNA, and that didn't really change anything for her. I'm just speaking out loud because it seems that for some girls there is a benefit when starting out to switch to an agency that finally believes in them and makes them a star (like Joan switching from Elite to IMG at the beginning of her career). However, once a girl is properly established (and for the sake of this argument let's assume this is a girl like Natasha Poly) why would she move agencies? Like Amber Valleta that just switched, what realistically speaking, would a new agency do for her that wasn't done previously.
I agree. If you're with a big agency and they're already booking big jobs for you, it seems to make no sense to defect. But a competitor could manipulate them into thinking that they're still missing out on jobs. "You should've gotten that Chanel campaign. I would've gotten it for you." That kind of thing. It's kind of part and parcel for agents to do and say those kinds of things to lure clients from competitors. Not saying it happened with MT because I don't know, but it wouldn't be out of the realm of possibility.
