i simply adore the trees.....the shoes suspended at the ceiling as if they're tree branches....that is the most enchanting thing i've seen in a while. and then the dramatic cloaks from her earliest collection(still a fave,in fact)....

so here goes:

From Wednesyday 12 march until Sunday 17 august 2008, the ModeMuseum(Fashion Museum)Province Antwerp presents the exhibition MOI, VERONIQUE. BRANQUINHO TOuTe NUe to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the label of Veronigue Branquinho.

The duality and mystery are the most important and constant terms
when you're in Veronique Branquinho's world: to attract and to shove off,
to play with and to push away.
The image of the red velvet curtain on the advertising poster,
a resemblance to 'The Red Room' from David Lynch's Twin Peaks, returns as the key note in scenography.
Heavy curtains are used to define the multiple rooms.
They create an intimate setting and provoke the visitor to discover and
unmask on their own what's hidden on the other side.

When you walk through Branquinho's collections, you'll notice that the Branquinho silhouette
is more about covering up than exposing. Ever returning, typical Branquinho items are the
long, dragging skirts with frill, capes ,with or without a giant hood which covers up
a part of the face and turtlenecks, which are worn underneath little jackets,blouses or bustiers, among others.
These are all articles of clothing that show a fragile, delicate frame, clothes
which above all want to keep enough space open for the sensual game of suggestion.

You'll find duality on different levels at Branquinho,as well in her image of a woman
as in the use and combination of fabrics. The Branquinho woman is innocent and erotic
at the same time,both frisky and severe, mysterious and always complex.
Her first creations where mostly about the period of time when a girl
becomes a woman and the emotional complexity of the rites de passages in the life of every woman.
Individuals like the little schoolgirl, the 'Prom Queen' and ambiguous characters from movies
like Histoire d'O, Heavenly Creatures and Bilitis are the ones living in Branquinho's world.

In the constructuion of her silhouettes, Branquinho loves mixing up items from the male
and female wardrobe, both when it's about the cut and fabrics. She has a soft spot for strong,
powerful, classic English fabrics, like tweed, which traditionally belong in a man's wardrobe
and she then combines them, in one and the same silhouette,with feminine fabrics like silk
or fragile handwork. This duality often continues in the construction of the silhouette
,for example when a very 'constructed' jacket with a lot of attention for the cut, gets
presented with a simple, more 'casual' skirt. Branquinho is always playing witch extremes,
trying to keep them in balance;severe and frisky, fixed and careless, soft and harsh.

it's so amazing the utter sublimeness and simplicity she usually expresses in her clothes yet there is the extraordinary visual side to her world. it's as said....there is this duality not only in her clothes but in the narratives she seems create to express her work and it's so mesmerising.

my fave bit from the pics posted are the images of the firls in the chairs...
and how they used the chairs again in the exhibit...

i just keep wondering how long ago those pics were taken...
what year that collection is from...
and whether those are the same chairs from the shoot or if they went and got new ones just for the exhibit..


my guess is that they are the same chairs..
so then...
does that mean they have been in her studio for some time...?
can you imagine going to the studio for a meeting or something and those are the chairs everyone is seated in...?!?!
...

i am literally swooning at the sonny images.....those close-ups....it just re-affirms my appreciation of her work. the craftsmanship is she bodes is utterly extraordinary. it looks so quiet and unassuming at first glance but once you really see a piece by her,it can send shivers down one's spine....or at least mine.

yeah,she adores cars,softie!! i think it's something to do with her love of the glamorous sixties because most of the ones she likes are 60s models.

kimmy looks beautiful there....she looks softer with her longer locks. and talking of cars,that's actually a love she and veronique share in common because kim loves old cars too.
