yet another trend from style.com :innocent:

May 31, 2007 – What's the new wave in fashion? We've noticed that moiré—the rather old-fashioned watermarked material that's made by pressing engraved rollers on fabric—is appearing in the collections of many emerging designers. Proenza Schouler dived in early, mixing moiré with bustiers and beaded tops last Spring. The California contingent— Jenni Kayne, Michon Schur's Stephanie Schur, Rodarte's Kate and Laura Mulleavy, and Katy Rodriguez—followed for Fall. "I like moiré because it reminds me of wood and its grain," said Rodriguez, who used a version of the material handmade in Switzerland on wooden looms over 100 years old. "And even though it has such tradition, it has a real organic, natural quality to it."

I have a few vintage dresses in this fabric, and from experience, it's rather heavy and stiff. But you can get some really pretty effects. I think a coat in this fabric would look great. Carolina Herrera uses this fabric a lot, I think.

nice. i knew of the fabric type but didn't know it's name... difficult to wear i think.

I have a feeling that this could look very cheap-ish in reality

moire, to my eye, works really well when reserved for pieces with VERY clean shapes... of all of the images posted above, i think the jenni kayne is the only one that works. any buttons/ruffles/lapels/etc just seem like too much in this fabric to me.

actually, i really like that jenni kayne... ^_^

Moire is just....heavy.

Makes me think of a huge, crinolined ballgown a la Scarlett O'Hara or worse yet, poufed 80's cocktail dresses.

Heavy can particularly useful in structure for jackets and hats and embellishments. ^_^

Can't think of moire in terms of clothing material, only curtain material :(

it's such a stiff fabric... maybe there are new technological advancements in the technology so that its softer and better than the vintage moire I'm imagining. it's a lovely looking fabric though!

interesting...not sure how i feel about this...
it's certainly unusual...

i wonder what's going on at the fabric mills that suddenly so many people are using it...:ermm:...
and such a broad array of designers too...!...
...

so watermarked taffeta is moire? It's a great fabric but not easy to use. Agreed Crepebackedsatin

. Me too.

do i like it? i seriously don't ..apart from being paper-ish in touch, (hence the comeback) i believe this kind of fabrics could make anyone looking 'heavy' , it's just too stiff..

I've always thought of it as stiff and synthetic ... definitely not organic for me! I agree that clean shapes are the way to go ... maybe a very light moiré overlay - I have a short black dress that consists of a black slip with a moiré layer on top, which makes it look interesting and a bit futuristic.

It could be a part of the whole futurism thing that's going on, and designers looking for other fabrics to use..

yes, futurism.. the 3D fabric effect which comes from the past..

but still designers may be introducing a totally new, more subtle moire texture, now i got curious..

i'd only wear this in tiny doses as accents/details

everytime a fabric tries to get a relaunch there are many diverse profit factors involved

whatever means/trend, can bring some boost to the market is well worth the try

moiré - not definitely my favourite trend. it's quite interesting though as a part of this futurism trend.

Proenza Schouler used it for S/S 2007, too:

From the newly posted Vivienne Westwood S/S 2008 thread. Thanks to I_bend_for_denim. Are my eyes deceiving me? Is this a pattern or moiré?
