Molly Goddard F/W 2020.21 London

Those sweaters at the end were clearly not meant to be ugly on purpouse and yet that's all I can see, they look like they would be the butt of a joke on a lousy sitcom.

The sheer floral looks were more to my liking, made for the woman who wants to indulge in her chintz day dream.

some great pieces (and some not so great...)
i love look 10 with the overcoat

She has such a strong signature and now she is facing the same problem as lots of designers. She is exploring more besides her iconic tulle / puffy dresses, I think it's hard because that's her stuff. What if it's gone or translate into something else that her costumers don't like ? Will the costumers understand / follow, or will she stuck in that and eventually, her costumers feel bored. It's quite hard but I hope she finds it.

So true. You cannot build a brand on an item...it has to be built on a personality and POV that allows you to explore many different facets of design, many different moods and inspirations, while maintaining your, idiosyncratic stamp...it’s what set the big designers of the past two/three decades apart...Galliano, McQueen, Karl, Marc, etc...they all did a million different things and went through many “phases” of their career.

Ms. Goddard cannot build a business on a tulle dress. It’s like how Altuzarra thought he could build a brand off of a slit skirt. Ain’t gonna happen....

it's probably not only about "looks" (i.e., for others) but also about emotions (i.e., for the self).

there's something magical about being ensconced in swathes of tulle, like a princess or ballerina, like a character in a fairytale. wearing these dresses may be about the associations and pathos.

if you've ever watched killing eve (which you should!) does eve wear a better, more memorable, outfit than the pink molly goddard dress? perhaps, it's arguable; the fashion on that show is AMAZING!! but the goddard outfit is so striking, so forthright and so romantic, that it's unforgettable.

so that's why i think women like wearing this line.

Yes, exactly. Sadly, nowadays the fashion industry is all talking about "HERO products", people are forcing to create a single items to finance the brand and the new generation don't have the sense of brand loyalty, till they find the next "it" thing, they will leave you.

mathewthew, i think you make good points, and with empathy too. this collection has some interesting outwear and layered prints so who knows... perhaps it's too early to say the brand won't survive without the tulle dress to carry it. i hope she can find a way too.

True. I never got why women bought Molly Goddard until I watched that scene.

I had to look for that Killing Eve outfit and I've got to say I understand the appeal even less now... She looks like a toddler, poor Jodie Comer is not tall enough to wear a calf length full skirt. Bloated is the right word.
