a very impressive collection of pictures,karina.thanks!!!but it doesn´t leave me much to contribute .

antonioni is one of my favourite directors and monica vitti was simply perfect as his heroine and muse.from his trilogy la notte,l´avventura and l´eclisse i like the latter the most becuase i think it is the quintessence of his work.the total estrangement between human beings,the unconnectedness (?)between them and the world they live in.a world that has become too fast,too modern,too cold.monica vitti walks through this world with an indistinct,obscure expression on her face and a certain astonishment regarding the world that surrounds her.there´s always a glipmse of hope underneath her world-weariness that she might find love ,a relatiuonship ,something real in this unreal world that is completely drained of emotions.in l´avventura and l´eclisse it seems as if she had found it but in the end it´s nothing more than an illusion.there is no bridge.no hope left.
i have only seen her antonioni-films.it would really interest me to see her in films by other directors.but she was simply perfect as antonioni´s heroine,so that´s enough for me to admire her.

when i came across the poster for il deserto rosso/red desert i remembered that i didn´t mention this film even though she gave such an incredible performance.i don´t know if i´m alone with this but i found this film almost painful to watch and the intensitiy that is created by vitti´s performance and the hostile surroundings and sounds antonioni chose hard to bear. one almost relives the fears and nightmares of the protagonist.it would interest me to know if the film had a similar effect on others .

Somnambule thank you for those pictures!

I wish I could say I had seen Red Desert but alas being in Britain Monica's films aren't available on DVD and are rarely shown on tv. I have to rely on specialist arthouse and international cinemas to catch a glimpse of the magnificent Vitti! But after hearing your thoughts on the film, I'm very keen to find it and sounds very Ingmar Bergman (almost unbearable to watch someone's very private moments).

thanks for the pictures !!karina,i love,love the sixth one you´ve posted.it shows her at her barest and most vulnerable .

i know the problem of acquiring antonioni´s films all too well.in the end ebay always proved itsself to be a good source.it´s kind of a miracle that the german amazon-site offers a dvd-version of deserto rosso.it´s the only antonioni film that is available on dvd in germany .i don´t know about the british amazon though.
i wouldn´t have thought of it myself but you´re right with comparing deserto rosso to bergman´s films.i think it´s the complete nudity of the soul that is so hard to watch yet at the same time it´s impressive since it´s seldomly reached in cinema.
