Montreal Fashion Week S/S 06

wow I'm really impressed. I generally don't like upstart fashion weeks as the clothing tends to be quite 'ethnic' instead of just being focused on fashion and a designers perspective so this is quite nice (though it's slightly hard to imagine canadian ethnic clothes what with a lack of any sort of ONE ethnicity)

I'm not sure I consider "ethnic" a pejorative quality the way you do. After all, why shouldn't Africa Fashion Week be a bit African, for example? That's not really even "ethnic", it's just a local response to a local culture, a local climate, and a local set of clothing traditions. And fashion needs to be more local in my opinion, not less. I'd be really disappointed if every fashion week all the world over started being a cookie-cutter copy of Paris.

But I agree with your assessment of Montreal...this is quite an impressive showing. Very diverse selection of designers.

That rather androgynous second look from Denis Gagnon is great.

Have people been to Montreal fashion week on this thread? How is the atmosphere? Do you need press passes?
I'm going to be in town for the last day of shows and I got in contact with the press girl for one of the designers to go see a show. If someone could PM me or let me know on this thread, I would really appreciate it.
Thankss!

I usually go to the shows. Its pretty chill. The big shows are harder to get into without a pass, but you can get in to most shows as long as you're willing to wait a little. But if you are press, of any sort, you should have no problem getting on the list if you contact the designers. And I know on Friday, Betrayal, is general admission ($10). Its a play and each scene has been styled by designers, some big, some small (including me). Should be fun.

Thanks, shapeofthings, for the reply.

I got on the guest list for Nevik.

Can you give me more information on Betrayal? Where and When is it? It sounds really fun, since I used to do theatre, and I also design on the side now.

breath of fresh air, maybe
the outfit liberty pointed out is really cute, but overall i think it's uninspiring and done before

Lovely-lady, Betrayal is taking place Wednesday, Thursday and Friday night at Time Cafe, 3509 StLaurent at 10pm. Participating designers include Denis Gagnon, Morales (yes, that's Renata Morales, gius), Yso, Fidel, Hastings and Main, Kuskalla, Kamkyl, Travis Taddeo, Yso, complexgeometries, Pearls Before Swine, Lydia Lukidis and Soku.

Everyone has either styled the scenes with pieces from their collections, or made costumes especially for the show. And its nice 'cause its really a community effort, which is sometimes rare in fashion.

Actually, there's generally a renewed sense of community in Montreal fashion with projects like Betrayal and the LABoratoire Creatif which is a non-profit organization that has helped many of the designers on schedule find sponsorship for their shows. There's a lot of talent here, a lot of creativity, and I think with some discourse and a little solidarity Montreal could begin to realize its full potential.

The complete schedule for fashion week is posted at www.mfw.ca

I've never followed Montreal Fashion Week but my professor now obliges me to get involved... there are many people in my classes that are styling as "bénévolat"(sorry, I don't know what's the word in English!).

All fashion have ethnic origins. The kind some posters on this forum take to be non-ethnic are really aesthetics based on many years of Western European traditions. Their ubiquity does not diminish the fact that they, too, originated from specific cultures. Those who say elements from other cultures should be barred from high fashion because such things are too "ethnic" are just plain wrong, and, perhaps unintentionally, racist.
