Montreal Street Style

i'll be in montreal in a few weeks for my cousin's wedding. i'm excited . . . i haven't been there in over two years (i usually go and visit my family there at least once a year). anyway, i'm hoping to get some time to shop around. i remember vaguely a district in montreal i found particularly interesting, but i don't remember it's name. i know it wasn't saint catherine but . . . anyway, does any montreal natives have recommendations for stores/districts to hit? i'm a student btw so i'm not looking to buy real designer fashion. i'm more into independent stores.

i actually remember montreal being quite fashionable, and it definitely had more of a european fashion vibe than most of canada/new england (i live in new england). i also remember a large number of hippies (NOT hipsters, you know, dreadlocks, indian-inspired clothes, the works), which i thought was cool. :)

here is how i see the shopping districts, a rough idea:

ste-catherine: mainstream stores + mall stores + department stores
(LaBaie, Gap, Banana Republic, Guess, Browns, Steve Madden, Puma, etc)

mont-royal: vintage/secondhand stores, and 'trendy' little stores that tend to be on the cheap side such as Miss Swiss, also stores like american apparel, and many shoe stores.

st-denis: along the same lines as mont-royal + some mainstream as well.

st-laurent: trendy and more pricey, worth checking out even if you don't buy anything. cool places in the mile end as well, if you walk the whole st-laurent blvd. you can find cheap stores such as space fb though.

it all depends on what you like....

personally i love h&m, which is located inside a mall (Rockland Centre), and buy other pieces at Zara, Mango, american apparel, space fb, miss sixty, etc.

Are you in some of those pictures Kimkhuu?! :shifty:

Also... if you visit Montreal, don't ever think of shopping on St-Hubert (unless you're looking for cool fabrics).

yeah the cobra pics are basically the same as all of the pictures posted on this thread so far - for the most part the peer pressure/i love neon crowd is never going to evolve beyond that kind of tongue in cheek, im a gigantic loser look. some of the chicks are cute, most of the dudes are gay waaaay beyond ever dressing all that well, on the whole is just kind of like does anybody care? didnt think so. but in their defence i think no matter what youve got on those cobra snake party pictures make you look like a piece of sh*t...i mean you cant go to a party where the entire premise is " some f***ing spiv flew in from LA to take more of the same pictures everybodys already seen" and look cool.

thanks...for some reason i think it was mt-royal but i really can't remember. it's been too long and i haven't been around the streets of montreal except for where my family lives (rosemont-la petite-patrie and anjou) and/or saint catherine in like three years.

i'm glad i'm going . . . i'll have my camera and one or two days to walk around/shop. i'll try and take pictures cos i'm not really shy about that and this thread is seriously lacking in them! thanks again, miuccia!

ahhh the peer pressure crew and their friends are posers and tryhards, thats nothing new..but so are cobrasnake crew etc etc

but some of their parties are cool

The styles posted here are mostly misshapes feeling ... if you hang out at french places in le plateau(baldwin's, etc.) ... the 25-45 crowd dress very well, and very differently ... wish I had pics to post :(

oh yes, Baldwin's is a great place to style-watch.... full of young professionals.

Hey, I agree with Miuccia(spelling) if you want cheap/independent stores St. Laurent, St. Denis and Mt. Royal are very easy to navigate/packed with lots of shops which is really nice when you don`t know an area well, and I wanted to send a little help your way....

Some of the store fronts can be really misleading! Most stores have the tackiest displays but a few rather nice things inside, so definitely check out as many places as possible.

If you are into consignment/used etc, there are couple places on those above mentioned streets as well (one of the bigger ones is located somewhere on St.Laurent between Duluth and Mt. Royal, don`t remember exactly)....but it is kind of difficult to do the whole thrifting thing in Montreal as it is really picked over, but I have gotten some gorgeous dresses etc...

Oh, and since you sounded kind of excited about the hippie thing, there are definitely a few of those shops on Mt. Royal and at least one down Duluth somewhere....They are mostly Indian and Tibetan boutiques.

Have fun!

you you should also check out:

REBORN:
http://www.myspace.com/boutiquereborn
(neat exclusive brands like bless, wendy and jim, etc etc. plus sh*t like acne, april 77 etc....plus the lady who owns it is a doll.)

BOUTIQUE U&I: - on st. laurent
www.boutiqueuandi.com
nice higher end stuff like martin margiela, comme des garcons, westwood, ann demeulemeester, plus like APC, acne etc.)

LES CREATEUR:
if you're a chick. womens ann dem, and if i remember correctly like rick owens and yoji and sh*t.

Does Les Createur carry RO for men?

And to echo doktor's sentiments, Reborn and U&I are IMO basically the only two stores that can be considered "in the know".

edit: michel brisson should be added to that as well.

thanks so much, guys! i love ann dem (she's perhaps my favorite designer) but i can't afford her at the moment. it might be fun to look around, anyway. i'll definitely try and check out all the districts you say, and get some people watching done, too.

i love tibetan and asian import stores, too, so i am now even more intrigued to check out some of these stores. and it leads me to believe even further mt-royal was the district i liked so much so long ago, because i bought a beautiful skirt from one of these type stores there. i hope i find some awesome stuff to bring home for a bargain!

I think Baldwin is pretty standard yuppie/preppy student fare (*yawn*), maybe there's something I missed or I was there on boring nights.

it was definitely doktoravalanche and the other guy whose name i don't remember but isn't from montreal i don't think. i haven't spotted you yet, or any one from sf. i don't know what anyone else looks like though.

and excuse my stalkerish behavior i am just really good at remembering faces (and not names). T:

Fuuma, Mass, we must organize this soirée.

I'm convinced now that I see someone from either here or sf quite often, we seem to have similar schedules. But who.....????
