Montreal Street Style

Milos ... is good, but the average person is not going anywher near their. It does not read: student!

:D

What is all this talk about good style being directly proportional to how much cash you have to throw around? If I'm not wrong the only thing that money like that buys that lack of money doesn't, holding fashion consiousness constant, is high end stuff. While the quality of a high end item such as a Chanel and Balenciaga bag compared to say an Aldo bag doesn't need to be debated, the ownership of such a bag doesn't mean that that individual has a good style or any at all. Any idiot with money can open up a Star or Us magazine and see that the motorcycle bag has been a hot item, pick up a Vogue and be told that it will be a classic piece and so conclude that if the Olsens carry them they must be cool and so go out and buy one of them.
When I talked about people in Montreal lacking style and mentioned the girls with bomber jackets and mukulks that had nothing to do with money. These girls I'm talking about probably spend quite a bit on their clothes, it's just the fact that they all follow the same trends togther at the same time that pisses me off. It's their unoriginality that sucks. The irony is that you can walk down a street in Montreal (or anywhere) and see a girl with real quality stuff from head to toe. I mean the Fendi bag and the three hundred dollar jeans and the marc jacobs aviators and the irony is that they are just as big the fashion victims as the former.
Check out the Model Street Style Thread. It is so inspirational not because they all wear high end stuff, because they don't, but becuase they make a generic t-shirt and an H&M blazer with old jeans look so chic. Fashion, Real Fashion is democratic. You don't need to have lots of money to look great. You can buy a pair of skinny jeans from the levi store for 50 bucks and a t-shirt from the thrift shop for 5 and throw in some old flats and look awsome. I don't want to offend anyone but it's a sad day if you think you can't be fashionable if you can't shop at Ogilvy's.
Sorry about the long post but I get worked up when people make a large bank account and designer clothes cumpulsory for being stylish and looking good.

errr ya. throw an old pair of faded jeans and a plain t-shirt on a MODEL and she'll look fab. do the same on sally o'mally down the street and she'll look plain as jane. come on now ;)

the rest i agree with.
every day i see westmount girls dressed in brands from head to toe yet they have NO STYLE AT ALL.

I see your point in that many models have what is seen as an "ideal" shape for clothes and so jeans and a t-shirt would look good on them. At the same time some of them don't look good at all in their "street style" so it's not necessarily that they are beautiful and tall and thin. If you go to the thread however many people have noted how inspirational it is for the fantastic way they pull outfits together and their originality in pairing stuff you might not normally think of. That was my point in using them as an example. If you go to the "what are you wearing thread" though you can see what I meant among "normal people". ^_^

Meens, great post..... Karma going your way....! ;)

The main problem with Montreal Street Style is it is purely based on trends, copying trends, and not worrying about looking the same.... I haven't heard anyone in Montreal complaining about trends being shoveled around for too long and everyone looking the same. People do not seem to mind being comformists... And the so called originals create a clique of their own and therefore create their own trends and end up looking the same!

I want people that try to achieve their own looks. It's not just about rejecting trends. It's about finding your own creative, unique look. Something that screams ME. Not fashion victim.

I am sick and tired of fashion victims. You can't believe how much I cringe when I get off at the McGill station once in a while for some shopping with friends. What do I see around me ..... ? A sea of girls all looking the same. Perfectly manicured nails (a la Francaise), designer jeans by the tons (or anything supposed to look like they paid a lot), mukluks or any ugly fur boots, the slouchy hobo bag or the LV monogram bag or the Aldo version of the Balenciaga bag...... I seriously want to throw up.... Do they even realize how silly it is to look SO original....!? *irony*

Fashion brought to the masses is at its WORST..... And its not like they're trying to find their own path, they don't seem to mind looking the same....

And then again, style is not proportional to $$, it has nothing to do with it..... !!! The girl with her real Balenciaga bag is not any cooler than the girl with the Aldo version of the same bag.... Both are trend victims, unless one of them actually likes the bag for the design..... But please, we all know it's not true anymore by now..... :innocent:

To be honest, I don't even think the models in the Models' Street Style thread have fantastic style.... It's just borderline decent, and they do actually all look the same.....

Maybe we have high standards or maybe people are just plain boring....^_^

For the mainstream Montreal crowd, style = $$$ labels, logos, It items.

Go figure!

I'm currently completing my PhD at McGill. It's an excellent school filled with people with great personal style. :flower:

^
gahhh i hate mcgill "style".

Kimkhuu - come on!! you're being so harsh with st-hubert street. i've always wanted to go into one of the stores and steal a wedding dress. :D

I don't think there is a "McGill style" because people are quite different and come from different backgrounds and cultures.

I find quite a few individuals have great personal style. I'm not talking about designer labels head to toe. I'm talkinga bout people who are able to use their creativity to pull together great ensembles.

Some have no style at all and lack creativity...but we wont talk about them. :ninja:

I've always found that the girls in MTL wear their clothes WAY TOO TIGHT. Big generalisation, I know. It's the best city in Canada, there is no doubt:heart:

Fox in the Snow, that's very true.... Thanks for pointing that out.. !!! The tighter, the better it seems, and the more cleavage the better... :ninja:

Boluda, sorry for being harsh with St-Hubert... But I couldn't help it... :p It's getting worse year after year... Even the wedding gowns are HORRIBLE.... I cringe each time I have to pass by there. There's nothing worth checking out on that street! It's full of stores that sell shirts "final sale, we're closing" for 5-10$ that are so horrible and uncreative... I can't recall finding anything interesting on that street..

CelineChic, I have yet to find someone with an interesting style at McGill, each time I pass down there I cringe.... I don't see any originality. I promise I'll try REALLY hard next time I pass by there to spot someone with a cool style...

If you spend more time around there you might notice. If you just pass by then you can't really have a good look.

I'm there 18 hours of the day so I suppose that I can see more.

You find? I haven't noticed that. I did notice that there are a lot of girls with full rear ends (which is a good thing in my opinion) :)

So are you being sincere with this list, or are you being sarcastic, I ask because Space FB is one of my top 3 favorite stores in montreal and if you're being sarcastic i wonder why you'd be insulting space FB

Thanks

God.... space fb... now if you want to be a fashion victim where that. Cheap overpriced crap that was cool like 3 years ago with westmount girls. Now everyone else wants it = total fashion victims. Everything that I have ever bought in the past from their ripped.

Oh and how can anyone say style is worse that space!! I agree the people there are annoying :( but atleast they do carry some nice brands that you cannot find anywhere else in Montreal. So, if you are going for those brands its a good store, just get out as soon as possible cause everyone is annoying.

I like influence U and Holts the best here.

Le Chateau,Limite Stiches, Ardene, Sirens, Urban Behavior, Garage,Pink! = cheap clothing, that makes girls look trashy.

Jacob, ConnexionJacob = more of a french style in montreal.

Urban Outfitters = different stuff, cool things.

Zara = dressyclothes for cheaper prices :)

Lacoste = classic style. Cute. Mcgill style

Club Monaco = generic

Browns = great selection of shoes.

This is just how I feel. I dont expect everyone to agree.

The best city? What about Vancouver?

okay i am from montreal and I really do not understand why some here say montrealers have style. LOL! No one knows anything here. Most girls have no clue about designers. If I named any designer that wasnt Gucci, Chanel, LV and prada they would have no clue. Montrealers catch onto trends when they are over and they stick with them forever! I wore Von Dutch like 3 years ago and I still see girls wearing that dumb hat.

I dont want people to get me wrong im not talking about everyone just the majority of people.

I don't know where your from but I see alot of girl with style. Not does fake bag and glasses but the reall thing If you are from Hochelaga maisoneuve well dont expect go in the west of Montreal and youll see more .. If you have money to buy the reall stuff you have money too order it or go get it ...
