I'm reading a book about eating disorders and the way of finding a healthy way of eating. It's not a diet book or a book that will deliver wonders in a day. It's called Mattillåtet and is written by a Swedish dietitian Gisela Van Der Ster, who has worked for a long time with eating disordered people and has been taking a part in developing the helping programs to the eating disordered. The book gives a lot of information about nutrition, and in one chapter it tells about water. Now as many of us know, people who try to lose weight, or eat "healthy", tend to drink a lot of water. However, according to this book, the recommended amount of water consumed every day should be 1,5 - 2 litres, or if you work out a lot, around 2,5 - 3 litres. If you do drink more water, it is not good for you.
First of all, water does not "cleanse you inside". According to the book this is a myth, and eating a balanced diet and drinking that two litres a day is enough. Overconsuming water does not "wash you inside". Drinking two litres a day is crucial, yes, but more than that does not make a difference. There's no scientific proof that water would cleanse you inside.
If you do drink constantly, it messes up your body's natural way of feeling thirst. This mechanism of thirst goes hand in hand with the amount of salt you consume. Your blood needs salt, which will keep the right amount of water in your veins. If you don't get enough salt, your blood is not in a good shape and that will cause problems. Drinking too much water and eating less salt is not a good combination; the water goes straight through your system and your body is not able to use it to the things it needs it.
Drinking too much water, let's say 4-10 litres a day, is not healthy. According to the book, if you have been drinking this much water every day it is not good to reduce the amount immediately. Why? Because drinking this much water has enlargened the veins in your brain. If you immediately and quickly reduce the amount of water you will get heavy headaches.
With everything you should have balance. Don't believe in all those articles about how drinking a lot of water makes your system clean, that might harm you.
I am not giving medical advice here, and all I have said has been referenced from the book I mentioned in the beginning.
I think with everything we should have balance, and that includes water. Too much of it is not good for you. Don't believe in what you read about in diet magazines or articles about macrobiotic diets or detox.
