So my fellow fashion psychics, which of the new breed of classics will stand the test of time (5 years). Chloe, Balenciaga, Luella, Mulberry, or Marc Jacobs?

I don't think any of those will, but if I had to choose, it'd be Balenciaga. Definitely not Mulberry or Luella, however.

Mulberry has been around for AGES and is a classic British house. I think they will definately be classics. I can see Balenciaga because I don't think it is too mainstream. It really depends.

balennciaga comes in cycles...it was in a couple yrs ago and recently came back... as much as i just love chloe bags i don't think theyre subtle enough to become classics

:unsure:I dont think it will be Balenciaga its too popular at the moment.... popular bags loose there appeal... like von dutch... the people who had that brand loved it until everyone had it... catwalk bags tend not to last more than 2 seasons after shown on the catwalk as then they are "in vogue"

:flower: I really think chanel has a classic range that will stand the test of time and so does LV

If we are considering 5 years the mark of a classic, which it really is not, then I would say any of them besides Chloe. Not because they dont make beautiful, classic styles, but because they change their range every season. Mullberry is traditionaly classic, and Balenciaga is the most avant-garde stretch of a classic. The truth is that all of the bags mentioned (maybe with the exception of Mulberry) are just "it" bags with an extended longevity. Also something to take into consideration is how long some of these bags have already been around. MJ has been doing his pushlock thing since the late nineties (when you could only get them at his store in SF), which puts him in the five year range, and we all know that Mulberry has been around forever (although I doubt that styles like the Roxy are going to have such a long run).

Having just returned from Manhattan, I found the Mulberrys (at Barney's and Bergdorff's) to be too reminiscent of the MJ Venetias and Birkins, and therefore passed on them. I love the Chloe bags and bought a Silverado python (back in November) and ordered a Paddington, which is due in March. I'm still debating the Balenciaga Moto, since I thought that the ones that I saw a Barney's loked a bit too distressed...I wasn't sure whether I wanted to spend the $$$ on a bag that seemed to be a bit thin... I absolutely adore the look, so I'm still debating as to whether to add this one to my collection. Help me decide :-)

the BALENCIAGA hands down. its already been around for 5 years probably.

the Mulberry for being so classic and the MJ for keeping true to its original styles;)

i could not agree more. the balenciaga has proved that it's more than a trend bag....and as i've commented in other threads, it's achieved its cult status without ever having an advertisement!

chloe bags, as delectable as i find them, are the definition of a trendy bag.

CHLOE: in my opinion, chloe is like the ultimate trendy-classic label. if you look back at the old designs by karl lagerfeld, they're still fashionable. i think chloe IS a classic already.

BALENCIAGA: hmm balenciaga have MANY more bags than the ledix/motorcycle, the label is quite classic although i agree with meowmix, that bag is an on/off favourite.

LUELLA: luella who? sorry, but I know nothing about this brand, except Christina Aguilera is a big fan of it (which says it all). So I will not make any comment because I´m clueless.

MULBERRY: my granma has a mulberry, my neighbour has a mulberry, everybody has a mulberry -and not because they're trendy but because they're timeless (very much like a hermes, only not quite the same). again, mulberry is already a classic.

Marc Jacobs: i have a very opinated opinion about marc jacobs. yes, he is a genious and he has a lot to thank wynona ryder for... ETA and those bags are a blatant copy of vintage bags from the 1970's, even those "unique" clasps...

i thnik some chloe could be classic... but to me classic is versace, louis vuitton, gucci or chanel handbags

i don't think Versace is classic at all. While LV, Chanel, and Hermes are classic already(I hate to include LV, but although tacky, those canvas bags have been around forever), I'm asking for "modern" day classic. You know, something new and may have establish themselves like the older classic bags.

I think its a really interesting topic

A whole generation of women are carrying the bags listed instead of the stock bag houses like Chanel, L.V., Gucci, Prada etc - I think its very refreshing

Mulberry is re-establishing itself as a relevant brand for a new generation (and doing a really good job at it too I think), but are not really 'new' as they are a brand that have always sold bags

Marc Jacobs I think will be around for a long while to come, bags need some refreshing though I think, the bags still look a tired to me, but really have their own distinct style

Chloe are pure 'it' bags, very seasonal, and need to create some real signatures to be around in 5 years, still great bags though

Balenciaga are still hot after all this time because the brand is still hot (and no-one buys the clothes anymore? So they have to buy something?), but they still have only really had one successful style of bag in 5 years!

I think Luella is by far the most interesting, I think the company is only about 4 years old and is being compared to these really big houses when as far as I know her company is tiny, the only non advertiser out of the five, o.k. the bags are a little raw, but also exciting and I think she has done really well to compete with such big house by creating her own iconic styles, if she keeps this progress up I think she will definitley be aroung in 5 years . . .

Luella is a british designer, she shows a womenswear collection in NY and has had a bag line for I think a couple of years, I've seen pic's of Christina with a Luella bag, BUT also pics of Gisele, Kate Moss, Reese Witherspoon, Daria Werbowy, Kylie etc etc carrying them too

Here's some pic's of Luella bags:

NOT MJ, definitely not... probably not Luella...

I love the Chanel Ligne Cambons, as well as all of their quilted bags. VERY classic.
