Exclusive! Nina Dobrev’s Stylist Gives an Inside Look at Her 2011 Emmy Awards Ensemble
It was no accident that The Vampire Diaries’ Nina Dobrev out-stunned just about everyone who walked the red carpet at the Emmy Awards on Sunday. No one could take their eyes off the gorgeous star in that red Donna Karan dress, six-inch Brian Atwood heels, and jewelry by Neil Lane. We caught up with the woman who put together Nina’s Emmy ensemble, stylist Ilaria Urbinati. In an exclusive Wetpaint Entertainment interview, Ilaria tells us what made her chose the dress, and why no one but Nina could have pulled it off — or slid it on.
Wetpaint Entertainment: What was your inspiration for styling Nina?
Ilaria Urbinati: First of all, we looked at a ton of dresses. Nina shoots in Atlanta so we only had her [in Los Angeles] for one day. So I already had a lot of options ready and when I saw the Donna Karan dress, I told her, “This is going to be the one. Just watch.” And sure enough the moment she put it on we were sold on it. It reminded me of sort of a ‘90s dress. It reminded me of Cindy Crawford going to the Oscars with Richard Gere and it reminded me of Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman.
What is it about Nina’s body type that made the dress perfect for her?
She’s physically pretty flawless. She’s incredibly slim but she has curves, which is very rare. I actually don’t know anyone like that. As a stylist I don’t think anyone else could have ever worn the dress. It literally looked like it was sewn on her. And it was Nina’s idea to make the bottom of the dress bigger, and obviously when the bottom’s bigger it makes the entire silhouette look slimmer. [Laughing] It also helps to have six-inch heels.
How long before the red carpet did you have to get her dressed?
She got into the clothes right before she got in the car and had a very uncomfortable car ride. That dress is not made for sitting. You actually can’t tell from the photos but it has incredible boning on the inside of the corset. I actually made her get a limo so she could sort of lay out. Usually when I dress people for these events I see them five or six times for the fitting and with Nina I had her one day for the fitting and then the day of. So we were doing alterations literally up until the eleventh hour.
Hehe, I love what the stylist says about Nina's body because it's what I've been saying this whole time.
