Will has a single costume that he wears the entire movie, which changes slightly in different scenes. We'll examine the basic costume and then use image resources in order to show the slite alterations in different scenes.
This is the top part of Will's basic costume:
The shirt is probably the same unbleached linen as Jack's shirt, with the same shoulder pleats, 3-4" cuffs and worn open. It is collared and has a single button which matches the color of the shirt at the end of the collar (see
coat section) The vest is a medium brown fabric with a slightly upraised vertical dash pattern all over. It has a round neck and the buttons run down the right hand side and stop at the natural waist. The vest has exactly ten buttons, each with a somewhat "flower" design consisting of a large central circle and six smaller ones around it. The buttons stop just below the navel. The buttonholes are horizontal to the ground and stitched with a color that matches the vest. The vest is a long one with no pockets, and it goes just below the hips. In some scenes, Will wears a wide leather belt (with a scabbard) which has a large, dull, gold, squarish buckle.
Will's breeches are a dark brown color, a different tone than the vest. They button at the knee and at the fly, and the cuff is probably around two or three inches. They're fairly baggy, but we never get to see what the waistband looks like because he always wears the vest. The stockings he wears are probably a light gray or dirty white wool. (To see his shoes, see the
Errol Flynn Costume. You can see in the above picture that he also has a red neckerchief on - in that picture it almost looks peach, but it looks as though that picture might have been lightened somewhere along the line.
The following picture shows the neckerchief in better detail:
The neckerchief (or piece of fabric, as it may well be) is checkered red and tan. (I'm sure this fabric has a name, I just don't know it.) In an earlier scene, where Will visits the Swann mansion to drop off the sword, he wears a coat, his shirt and vest are completely buttoned up, and the collar on the shirt is worn up. There are no high-quality images of the coat, but Kimera from Whiskey Tango Foxtrot has screencapped the entire movie and there are a few things we can discern about the coat.
The coat has a double collar and large square pockets and is brown. It looks like it has buttonholes down the left side, so it probably has buttons! It is mid-thigh length and probably split in the back like Jack's coat - from the bottom hem to the small of the back.
The "Errol Flynn" Costume"
The costume which has been dubbed the "Errol Flynn" costume by many fans and critics is actually just additional items on top of Will's regular costume.
In addition to his linen shirt, brown vest and breeches, belt, stockings and shoes (heeled leather shoes with a long tongue and big square buckles), Will dons a dark red cape that ties with long brown thick rope ties which are knotted at the ends. They fall about to his hips. The cape is tucked underneath the collar of his shirt and is mid-calf length.
Will also has two crossed sword scabbards that are under the cape and slung over his shoulders. The one on top is a brown-black tone with a big square tarnished gold buckle. The one underneath is a more red toned brown leather and has a silver, rectangular buckle. And then there's that hat. It is a light beige-tan color and has a wide brim that is folded up on one side (the left). The underside of the brim has gold trim with a wave design. The huge feather is white and sticks out from the left side of the hat. There is a dark brown band around the top of the hat and it has a round flower buckle with eight petals.
