OUMI’s third collection “JUST PAST” is inspired by the designer’s vivid memories from her childhood and vague memories from her recent visits to Japan. The childhood memory is expressed in her silhouette and color, and the vague memory is expressed in the unique fabrics and construction of the patterns.
“JUST PAST” is an idea that arose when the designer came across two photo books by two different Japanese photographers: “Yoko” by Nobuyoshi Araki, and “Memories 1995” by Seiichi Furuya. These two books chronicle each of these photographer’s time shared with their late wives. The portraits of their late wives seemed as though they were memories “just past”, always trailing close behind the present. These emotionally intense photographs influenced the designer to become more focused and interested in her own memories and photographs that she recorded herself. The memories and photographs started to overlap and come together.
