Roger "Syd" Barrett, the man who co-founded Pink Floyd, has died at the age of 60.
A spokeswoman for the band says the reclusive star died a few days ago, but wouldn't disclose the cause of his death, according to media reports. Barrett co-founded the British group in 1965 with Roger Waters, and was the original singer, songwriter and lead guitarist. The troubled genius wrote a large amount of Pink Floyd's 1967 hit album 'The Piper at the Gates of Dawn.'

His life was rather tragic, but he did make great music.
I hope he's happier where he's at now..

Wow. I can't believe he died so young. Piper at the Gates of Dawn is one of my favorite albums of all time. He was such a talented musician, but his life was so sad. I remember reading that during the recording of Wish You Were Here, Syd stepped into the studio and nobody recognized him. Everybody was thinking who's this balding, fat dude in the corner and then they realized half an hour later who it was.

Shine on, Syd.

I was just gonna post this. I'm saddened.

"LONDON Jul 11, 2006 (AP)— Syd Barrett, the troubled genius who co-founded Pink Floyd but spent his last years in reclusive anonymity, has died, a spokeswoman for the band said Tuesday. He was 60.

The spokeswoman who declined to give her name until the band made an official announcement confirmed media reports that he had died. She said Barrett died several days ago. She did not disclose the cause of death.

Barrett co-founded Pink Floyd in 1965 with Roger Waters and wrote many of the band's early songs. The group's jazz-infused rock made them darlings of the London psychedelic scene, and the 1967 album "The Piper at the Gates of Dawn" largely written by Barrett was a commercial and critical hit.

Barrett's behavior grew increasingly erratic, and he left the group in 1968. He spent much of the rest of his life living quietly in his hometown of Cambridge, England.

The band spokeswoman said a small, private funeral would be held.

This is so sad. He is one of my biggest influences, and his music was so wonderfully weird and brilliant.
There are so many indie-boys who are trying to copy his looks and image, but he will always be the original.

Shine On You Crazy Diamond

Here's some of my favorite pictures of him

Oh .. no... :( May he rest in peace.. great man

News like this tends to be shocking and yet not completely surprising - I had heard that he was in ill health for a number of years. Today in the car a radio station played several Floyd songs from "Wish You Were Here" and I said to my brother that it possibly wouldn't be long before the guys in the band started to leave us. I didn't hear an announcement about Barrett's death. Then I read it online. What a blow to the members of Pink Floyd.

^absolutely. I think we all saw it coming but still is very saddening...he contributed so much not just to the music world but also to shaping the ideals of many generations. he will be missed.

R.I.P Syd Barrett
