Power Tie!!!

This may be a very unhelpful suggestion but I know there is a brand that makes ties with extremely high thread count which (the name is like a persons name. Like an initial and then a last name or something to that effect) I believe makes it very hard to wrinkle? It was rather expensive as far as ties go (180 I believe) but supposed to be of supreme quality.

As for other brands...I believe most of the good ones have been listed here. You might want to check some back issues of GQ because it seems to be that every month they have some sort of layout involving ties. Might help aide your quest for good color schemes.

faust - I personally like Armani ties. Simple & classic. I have a friend who wears Hermes & I am not so keen on them. I like simple classic strped ties. If you are going for a less conservative job then a Magaret Howell tie might look good (fairly skinny non-city) but you won't be able to get those in NYC. I suspect Johnny will have muchos advice for you on ties....

Yea, the one I got is a classic, striped one (but not a different color stripes, just different shade and texture). I figured that wearing a tie with little giraffes (Hermes reference) would not do for an interview

yeah they are all only into power suits and things like that it seems. brioni and bespoke dress shirts and the like. i lurked around there for awhile, then i finally found this place. :)

What kind of tie I should get for a black pinstripe suit (haven't bought yet, but I have decided that I want a black pinstripe suit for my graduation party)? I guess a solid color but green/pink/red? :ninja:

So, I am starting to look for a new job. Since I haven't worn a suit in ages I left my tie collection at my parents house a few years ago. My dear father decided to donate all of them to Salvation Army... without asking me. So now they are gone (including my beloved Hermes). Yea. So, I need a power tie! The obvious and a very expensive choice is Hermes. The best choice is Hermes at a Hermes sample sale. Is there one soon? What are my other choices? My suit will be black (duh). Post away!

P.S. Don't suggest Ebay for Hermes, since it is a widely "imitated" brand.

I left my tie collection at my parents house a few years ago
I also collect ties :p theres not so much right now, about 50 or something
I like them ;)
My fave is an YSL tie :flower:

Some random tips to add to the thread:

Thomas Pink is a decent cheaper alternative to Hermes...a lot of their ties are in that classic Hermes style (animals and all), but at a cheaper price point. Of course, there's no 100% substitute for an Hermes original, but if you like that mildly whimsical aesthetic, it's a reasonable approximation.

Forzieri.com is a good online source of quality Italian ties. If you want something luxuriously conservative for work, Italian is often the way to go.

If you want a skinny mod/rockstar tie, Forzieri carries those too: silk ones under their own brand at pretty reasonable prices (under $50), plus a decent assortment of those square-ended knit ties. Also, eluxury.com carries the skinny Dior Homme ties. Raf Simons has also made some nice skinny ties, but those are harder to find.

And if you want to be an uber-dandy, Forzieri even carries ascots, plastrons, and bowties. Rule of thumb for ascots and plastrons: if you have to ask what it is, you don't need one. Still, new dandies are born every day, so maybe you do.

If you want a cotton tie to go with your cotton suit (in my opinion the best way to complete a cotton suit), Jil Sander and Helmut Lang make very nice cotton ties. However, Helmut Lang is in brand-sale limbo right now, so look for Jil Sander.

And finally, I promise I don't work for Forzieri, but they also have these 100% cashmere ties which are very soft and look great next to a tweed jacket if you want to dress it up a bit. I'd never seen a cashmere tie until I stumbled on these, but I've since discovered that Ralph Lauren Purple Label makes them, too. Give it a try if you've been wanting something different in a necktie.

Cashmere ties used to be popular in Britain, my dad had loads from the days of old, along with Armani 'wool' ties, I hated them. Knit silk, square-end or cotton ties (APC makes very nice cotton ties) are the way to go, I reckon.

My father's a businessman, and only wears Hermes ties (tie snob!), so I'm quite partial to those. He's had many of his for 20 years or so, it's crazy.

Personally I also like Vineyard Vines ties, but you have to sort through some of the nuttier, out-there preppy prints.

Thomas Pink is a good suggestion, my father swears by that store too. I would expect that Brooks Brothers would have nice, plain ties as well as Joseph A. Bank (my brother loves this one, cheaper than Brooks Brothers but same idea).

I know I'm a girl so I don't wear ties, but as an observer I'd recommend against solid colors, they can often look cheaper. Nice stripes and simple patterns on red or navy blue are safe, classy bets, especially for stuff like job interviews.

$155.00, Hermes (the prototypical power tie)

Sorry if my tie tastes are too preppy and old-mannish for you!

Solid colors don't have to look cheap. The key with solid colors is quality.

When you have a patterned tie, you can get away with a fabric of lesser quality, because the focus is on the overall graphic effect of the tie. With solid colors, it's the fabric that gets all the scrutiny, so it had better be special.

A jacquard or other patterned weave can be very effective, or an exceptionally unusual color, or simply a silk so magnificently made it could light up a darkened room.

Good point! Maybe solid color ties look cheaper to me because I've only seen cheap ones :)
