Pre / Cruise / Resort : What's the Difference?

I remember it was discussed on a cruise collection thread ... the short version is ... on the stores during Fall/Winter you cant get summery clothes ... why would someone want light summery clothes on december? The wealthy who run away to the caribbean or the mediterranean from the cold ..
There was an opening at the market and then the cruise collections were born!

resort is also another 'name' used for cruise collections

Cruise/Resort: Definition

I've only just discovered these "resort collections" and can't find too much info on them. What's the history behind them, and how long have they been running?

And, are they influential in terms of summer trends?

well, to my understanding, they are summer clothes you can buy in winter....
it came about as a result of the wealthy going away to vacation in the tropics during winter. the stores realized that the customers needed warm weather clothing to go on these tropical vacations................
designers started providing them with merchandise to fill the need of the customers and it became, eventually, a whole collection and an entire "season" to itself

Personally, I hate them, and would never do a resort collection ..............
although a lot of designers are "forced" to to keep retail accounts with certain stores...........
the problem it creates is Fashion houses have more work to do, thus less time to develop ideas for SS and FW collections (no wonder a lot of this seems like crap nowadays)
it leaves less time on the selling floor for each seasons collection and facilitate the greed of the rich,

Damn! cant you just take the clothes you just bought in the summer on your vacation?

thanks guys!
so when exactly is the shelf life of these collections... october through to february? something like that?

I like the idea but I dont think they have to ge as extravagant as they seem to have become

I think Resort collections are mostly designed by asisstant designers

but i don't like resort cause they on't the video, i think resort must be easy going not like the last dior show, wich is taking to long so can i say more about resort

thanks so much for opening the thread bc i was wondering the same thing

is there are a fall version of cruise/resort? Or is it just fw, resort, and ss?

i don't think there used to be---but more and more designers are doing a 'pre-fall' collection now...

more and more these interim collections are gaining importance...
due to several factors...
including the short attention span of consumers and the rise of fast fashion...consumers are always hungry for something new...

and also- the global shift in weather conditions...
when it's too warm for a winter coat in November...it mean that designers have to re-think their collections and their deliveries...

designers are opting more and more to do runway shows for these collections and i wouldn't be surprised if in the near future we see these smaller collections growing and taking on even more significance..

we could wind up with 4 full on fashion weeks...
it's getting there already...
this is especially true in the north american market...
which is why so many designers are opting to show resort collections here in NYC and sometimes in LA...

it's the beginning of what looks like a major shift coming....
:innocent:

^ughhh 4 rounds of fashion weeks..

the models are going to dieeeeeee

^It sounds awful for models and designers and even the media. As much as I love the idea of all four seasons, can you imagine how conflicting the directions of seasons would be?

I only like the idea of cruise & pre-fall this way; i mean, if they are designed by asisstant designers. It gives the oportunity to people to beggin in the fashion world. Otherwise, it would take time and ideas to designers for the main line.

it would mean smaller shows and more of them...
so i dont' see how it would be any sort of conflict...

pre-fall would lead into fall in terms of concept and direction...
it could actually give designers an opportunity to develop ideas and trends more thoroughly...and give them an opportunity to work closer to the actual seasons-which helps when trying to determine what customers want to wear now...

and it would give the stores a steady influx of merchandise for the customer who has now become accustomed to fast fashion...
which would then increase sales...

which is good for everybody....
more money means more profits, which means bigger budgets for advertising and salaries...

it can only be a good thing as far as i can see...
it's like eating several small meals through out the day rather than one big meal in the morning and one big meal at night....
much better for the digestion...

;)
