Princess Mary of Denmark

At the Kronsprinsparret? place... a friend of mine in Denmark said that her Danish was quite poor and that people couldn't even understand what she was saying! What a shame.

^When did your friend heard her speak?
Because I can guarantee you her Danish is excellent now. I live in Denmark right now and my Danish friends confirm she speaks impressive Danish.
The Prince consort Henrik is the one who can't speak Danish.

I love her ensemble for the opening of Parliament. The 3/4 sleeve coat is something I'd love to have. Does anyone know the designer?

Learning a new language is always hard. She can't be expected to master Danish in only three years.

Well......... yes and no, Christina. Yes, learning a language in a book, at school far away from the country/ies where it is spoken is extremely hard.
But three years living in Denmark, interacting with Danish people on a daily basis, and, on top of that having the best instructors to teach you the correct grammatical points........ In my experience, that is more than sufficient to make a person fluent in a language. Remember also that Mary has lived in Denmark more than three years! She was living there at least a full year before the engagement was announced. She went to work for Microsoft division in Copenhagen.
If she speaks Danish a little slow, a little halted, that's understandable, but she should, considering all these factors, be able to speak it enough to communicate effectively.

At the very least, she should be able to be understood, which I believe was the problem. This is a rehearsed speech, written well before the event that could have been memorised phonetically.

I totally forgot to get back to this thread.
Well I have asked my Danish friends as I said I would and absolutely all of them confirmed that Mary speaks excellent danish and as been doing so since about 8 months after her wedding. She took a longer time than Alexandra to learn the language and does have a noticeable accent but she is clearly understood by all.
The author of this article obviously has some agenda against Mary because I haven't found anyone to back up his claim.
