R.I.P. Eiko Ishioka

this is more than just a miss, though. she wasn't just another costume designer who worked in film, she won an Oscar for her work. A lot of the other people in the montage worked in film but weren't recipients of the award. it's such a glaring omission.

I agree---it's odd...

if anyone gets to NYC...
the costumes she did for Spiderman on Broadway right now are pretty great...

Ok, I understand now. It was a drastic overlook.

The Oscars are so irrelevant to the art of film that I didn't mind the omission so much. I think her legacy is still secure.

^^^ Totally. The Oscars are terrible, so I don't care that Eiko was overlooked.

She was so exceptional and never traditional. Her designs were as if the surreal world came to life. She was the ultimate graphic designer.

Her costumes for Coppola's Dracula remains so glorious; that perfect mix of cultures, silhouette and baroque, and sheer hellishness still frightens and fascinates me to this day. It's one of the main reason to watch that film despite the most horrible acting.

Darcula's battle armour is majestic and so creepy. But, Eiko's wedding dress costume for Lucy remains the most nightmarish realization for me. I don't scare easily, but that very simple image of Sadie Frost in that reptile-inspired wedding dress slowly walking back towards her coffin carrying the little girl is so, so frightening, it's beyond visceral, beyond disturbing. And if you watch the documentary, in that scene, the poor little girl was screaming, struggling, and crying so intensely-- I would have to... Eiko is a master at designs that get under your skin. She was just that good. So thankful for her contributions to design.
