Sweet, nice and owner of a unique beauty, the gaúcha (person who comes from south Brazil) from Bom Retiro do Sul Raquel Zimmermann, elected as the most required model by models.com, hosted Caras for an exclusive interview in Fasano Hotel, in São Paulo.
Even after long hours of a flight coming from New York, she arrived excited for the photo shooting and approved the looks separated from the Balneário line, the new Animale collection, brand which she represents for more than four years in Brazil.
On the bed of her apartment, still with robe, before getting ready for the photos, she talked about the beginning of her career, the difficulties and rivalries of her career, her future on runway and her personal plans that include marriage and children with her boyfriend, the Chilean photographer Ruy Sanchez Blanco (36).
How was the beginning of the most required model of the moment career?
I was 14 and everyone at school in Novo Hamburgo, where I lived, said I should be a model, because I was tall and skinny. I went to an agency, did a book and came to SP to strive. I started to do teen magazine covers and I was discovered by an agency in Japan.
Which was the biggest difficulty you faced when you moved at only 15 to a such different country like Japan?
I stayed there for only two months. I went alone, with anybody from my family to help me, but the good thing was that the agencies from there took care of all girls very well. Even thus, it was a total cultural shock. Straight from south Brazil to Japan. I couldn’t speak even English… I was used to the food of my home, barbecue, rice, bean, this kind of stuff. I think it was tough, but it wasn’t a trauma. I thought: ‘That’s gonna be hard! But to give up, no’. Everything was fascinating, and then I started to get money, it was nice to go shopping.
What was your pathway before becoming a worldwide known model?
From Japan, I went to Italy, Paris, New York, I kept traveling without a fixed residence, doing shows, campaigns and fashion weeks. In 2000, when I arrived in New York and Steven Meisel – renowned fashion photographer – started to shoot me, it was the boom. With him, I shot for Italy Vogue, Versace and other big works. Since then, I worked and still work, too much, until reaching that position.
Did you face a sort of jealously amongst models out there?
No way! Brazilians, especially, are super cozy to new models. Gisele Bündchen and Fernanda Tavares, when I started modeling, supported me a lot. What exists is a little dispute between Russians and Brazilians. Brazil and Russia in the fashion world would be more or less like Brazil and Argentina in soccer (laughs).
What has changed in your life after the election made by models.com?
In the way I face life and my work, nothing. Just internally, as an accomplishment. I get satisfied for getting all this recognition. But I still do dozen of shows in fashion weeks, and shoot for magazine covers and ad campaigns. I did the biggest shows in the last international season: London, New York and Paris, for Marc Jacobs, Kenzo, Prada, and others. I just didn’t do any show in Milan because of a project with the photographer Juergen Teller. This year, I’ll be selective about shows, I’ll slow down.
How’s this new book?
It’s a different thing, that is not connected to any ad campaign, it’s something between fashion and art. This work is something totally flattering, because he (the photographer) has always worked with big models, like Kate Moss, for instance. We’re shooting in various settings around the world. Recently I was in Paris, photographing in many spots for the book.
Between so many trips and works, how does the personal side get?
I’ve been with Ruy for seven years, but we live together for five, in New York. I’m always hurried to deliver my schedule, and so is he, because he shoots fashion photos, but when we can adjust our appointments and hit the days off, we enjoy a lot every single moment we’re together.
Do you think about getting married?
Not now. It’s so rare to have some time for us, like I was saying, that when we can, I don’t want to spend that time organizing a party. I think that’s why we’re always putting off. What really worths in a relationship is the sentiment, and in our minds and hearts we’re more than married. After seven years together it seems I’m more in love with Ruy, can you believe that?
Do you plan to have kids?
I’m young, I’m 25 and we’re still in that phase of enjoying each other, having the honey moon. Of course we want to have kids and a family, it’s a dream, but we still need to travel together, do things for both of us. In some years, we’ll surely have, but right now we live for us.
