The Opera-Gloved Fashion Illustrations of Rene Gruau

Famous French fashion illustrator René Gruau was born in Rimini, Italy, in 1910 as Renato Conte de Savagli-Ricardelli. His French mother separated from his father when he was two or three years old, often moved and traveled, and he accompanied her. In the late 1920s, they moved to Paris, France, and he started his career as an illustrator for fashion magazines. From 1955 onwards, photography took over illustrations and fashion drawings in several newspapers and fashion magazines. From this time on, most of Gruau's work concerned fashion advertising (fashion accessories, gloves, perfume, cosmetics, lingerie, fabrics etc.) In 1989, a René Gruau Exhibition was held at the Musée du Costume at the Palais Galliera (Paris). To this day, he continues to work for advertising, and has started drawing for fashion magazines again: Elle, Madame Figaro, Vogue, L'Officiel de la Couture. The elegant ladies in his illustrations often wear - of course! - opera (or other long) gloves. Source of the pictures: Joëlle Chariau (ed.:( René Gruau. Schirmer/Mosel, Munich, Germany 1984 (ISBN 3-88814-229-6).

thanks for the thread softgrey!
his elegance has always been an inspiration to me. i was so disappointed that when he died last year vogue didn't pay him tribute with a cover...that would have been great.

I love his work, his restricted use of color really makes the lines stand out.

i absolutely LOVE rene's work! i just asked if someone would make me an avatar of some of the stuff. the 'lanuit' someone posted earlier is so beautiful.

gorgeous! What great style René has! You know, the interest in the gloves and the use of block color reminds me of the lithographs of Toulousse Lautrec, and of course the drawings and studies he did of Yvette Gilbert, in which the black gloves were like a trademark.

i was poised and ready to start a new gruau thread! :crush:

i  his dior stuff, and some covers for international textiles:
