Rick Owens F/W 2023.24 Paris

The simpler pieces are where is at, that opening look and the baby-doll tunics are wonderful but they are drowned by the noise of those awful stuck-inside-a-glittery-neumatic looks. He’s chilled a bit with the crazy shoulder volumes and that’s progress, albeit small. I kinda like the cut of the boots for the season…I must be going crazy but they remind me of his F/W 08 collection which I love.

Same collection. Again. And again. And again. Again…

I used to be a huge RO fan a decade ago when each season was a new strong world on its own.
At one point, before Demna, he was the « enfant terrible « de la mode with weird/shocking presentations.
And the clothes were gorgeous.

Since Tyrone Dylan / Covid the brand is becoming a mess.

F/W 08 was insanely good indeed. The perfect tiny jackers, the flare pants, the wedged-boots.
Funny because I saw a woman wearing those zippered « chaps » yesterday in Paris.

I appreciate that Rick is in his 'I want to experiment' phase but - speaking as someone who grew up in a 'colourful' culture - it takes finesse to choose and combine them, and he just doesn't have it. I wasn't expecting Dries van Noten, Yohji or Prada levels of refinement with it, or even Comme-style punchiness, but a better eye.

edit: and I actually like that lime green and pink together, the pink with burgundy boots, and how sculptural some of the puffy pieces look, but this isn't it. Needs work, or exorcising, or something.
