Discovered by chance and soaring through fashion’s echelons to become a Vs Angel at just 20, Romee Strijd lives a charmed existence – even for a model. She tells Mark Smith about life at the top.

So much for privacy. It’s a busy afternoon on the sixth-floor restaurant of Amsterdam’s new W Hotel and, having led 21-year-old, 6ft supermodel Romee Strijd to a quiet corner for our interview, I’ve just clocked what’s positioned right beside our table for all to see: ‘Enjoy a beautiful view – this is Amsterdam’, spelled out in neon lighting. It refers, presumably, to the city’s Royal Palace across the road. But suffice to say, the group of 20-something men drinking beers outside on the pool deck are no longer entirely fixated on the palace’s ornate neoclassical architrave. This, I suppose, is the Victoria’s Secret Effect.

After ordering a sparkling water, Strijd (it’s pronounced Roe-may Stride, although she’s given up on correcting people: “Just say what works!”) tucks her Gucci-loafered feet beside her on the sofa and we talk – unavoidably – about the weather. It’s by far the hottest day of the summer and Strijd, over from her adopted home of New York to visit friends and family in Holland, is wearing a cropped white shirt that reveals her tiny, toned midriff. Her boyfriend of seven years and “kind-of manager”, Laurens van Leeuwen, wasn’t sure about this sartorial choice. “He was like, ‘Are you sure you want to wear that to go outside in Amsterdam?’” she laughs. She was sure. “Still, I do have certain pieces I wouldn’t pack for Holland, because I know people here just wouldn’t get it. A few years ago, I was wearing those Isabel Marant stacked-heel sneakers and all my friends were like, ‘Where did you get those monsters!?’” Nowadays, there are versions in every other store. “Everything comes here a little bit late,” she laments.

Childhood sweethearts Strijd and van Leeuwen grew up 60km away from here in the Lego-like town of Zoetermeer. Van Leeuwen’s father is a well-known Dutch Tv presenter – “His family understand what it’s like to work in this kind of industry” – while his younger sister happens to be Strijd’s best friend: “When we go on family trips, my best friend is along for the ride. I’m like, this is so efficient!”

At school, Strijd was a popular, sporty kid who was on the field hockey and running teams. The idea of modeling first presented itself when a scout approached her, aged 13, and her mother in the street on a shopping trip to Amsterdam. The teenager rejected the idea out of hand. “I had no idea about fashion and I didn’t think it was for me,” she recalls. So the scout’s business card languished in a drawer for a year or so, until a Tv show about modeling piqued Strijd’s interest. Things moved fast and, before long, she was in New York for fashion-week castings. She giggles at the memory: “My mum would WhatsApp me a picture of each designer’s face just before I walked into the room, so I’d know when I was speaking to Marc Jacobs or whoever. I would have had no idea otherwise!”

She believes her – somewhat oblivious – early excursions to planet fashion may have been a blessing in terms of maintaining a healthy attitude to what can be a precarious industry: “I’d be in Paris to walk in a Louis Vuitton show without even appreciating what a big deal that is. So I don’t think I felt the pressure in the same way that I might have if I’d been older.”

The work kept coming, and when the Dutch edition of Vogue launched in 2012, Strijd’s face was on its cover. Hers is the biggest Dutch name in modeling since Doutzen Kroes, who hung up her Victoria’s Secret Angel wings around the time that Strijd signed her own lucrative contract, in 2015. Did Kroes give her any advice on how to navigate the underwear behemoth? “She told me to stay cool and try to enjoy it all. Doutzen is a real inspiration, but I think everybody has to approach modeling their own way.”

Strijd’s own Mo can broadly be defined as keen and committed. “Fun is nice, but my career is my priority at the moment,” she tells me with typical Dutch directness. She manages her own Instagram feed (crucial to the millennial model), will always agree to curtailing a vacation for good work, and is big on punctuality. Half an hour ago, she was in the W Hotel’s sweltering gym. “There was an exercise I didn’t understand, so I texted my gym in New York, forgetting that it’s the middle of the night there. They responded right away,” she approves.

The 24/7 exercise oracle in question is The Dogpound, the cult Tribeca gym that inspires fervent devotion in its members, all of whom look like they were born to wear athleisure. Strijd attends four times a week. “Three times by myself and once with friends,” she elaborates, “because I think it’s fun to do breakfast beforehand or lunch afterwards. It’s great to have friends there to motivate you.”

We need to talk about those friends. Strijd lives in New York’s Chelsea neighborhood, on the same block as fellow Angels Josephine Skriver, Taylor Hill and Jasmine Tookes. “We’re less than a minute away from each other, so we hang out a lot of the time,” says Strijd. “We’ll watch movies or play drinking games at home. We call ourselves the Chelsea Squad.”

Granted, it sounds like the best Mtv reality show that never was, but if you’re imagining the Chelsea Squad to be a Mean Girls-esque, you-can’t-squat-with-us coven of spiralizing frenemies, you’re wrong. “There are always stories [in the media] about competition behind the scenes,” says Strijd. “But that’s just not how it is – at least not in my experience.” She recalls how, at her first Vs show in London in 2014, her fellow Angels instinctively came to her aid during backstage interviews: “They’d help me with my English so that I could keep the conversation flowing. It feels so good to have such support.”

All the big-sisterly bonhomie, Netflix nights and matriarchs on WhatsApp sounds like a very different industry to that depicted in The Neon Demon, the recent dystopian film in which models literally eat each other to get ahead of the game. “Ooh, Taylor [Hill] has a cameo in that!” enthuses Strijd. “It’s great. I’ve always said Taylor should have her own comedy show; she’s so entertaining.”

Strijd can’t see herself following Hill into showbiz anytime soon, but it does sound like she might have the makings of a Goop-era Gwyneth Paltrow: “I like the idea of helping people find balance in life, advising on how to exercise and eat properly,” she says. Her own body shape has fluctuated over the years, she says, but she’s found a routine that prioritizes strength over skinniness. She does weight training and focuses on “healthy carbs” like sweet potato and oatmeal. Her Instagram betrays an obsession with artichokes (“It’s love. I ate my first one in St. Tropez with olive oil and salt. Delicious”). She adores music, but hasn’t had time to put any on her iPhone yet. She and van Leeuwen would like a family one day, but for now it’s all about work. There’s plenty of time; she’s only 21. And Romee wasn’t built in a day.

The white look is really pretty. I don't feel like either of her looks really did her justice this year though. She's such a standout in the angel lineup. I was hoping she would get something a little more special.

I think her outfits are fine... did she get a boob job, or is it just terrible contour?!

I think it's a boob job.. they just sit there in perfect circles.

She looks freaking pretty here. Wish her hair & makeup looked like this in the show.
