For Sally LaPointe's first full-on Resort collection, she wanted to bring things down to earth. "It's about being grounded," LaPointe said during a visit to her Chinatown studio. And she meant it quite literally. The palette was inspired by "reptile terrain": Terra-cotta, wine, and buttercup yellow were mixed in with the designer's standard white, brown, and black. Fur does well for LaPointe, so she incorporated it via another top-performing category: knitwear. The front of a cropped white mock-neck sweater was covered in jaguar mink, and the shoulders of a form-fitting turtleneck sweaterdress were dabbed with the same fur in black. (It worked nicely in those instances, but a fox-covered shell was a little too chunky.)
LaPointe likes to focus on the waist: Even her allover embossed prints are scaled down toward the middle to make the wearer look narrower. Still, she moved slightly away from the typical structured silhouettes that she tends to favor. A long skirt—made from 12 yards of yellow chiffon—paired nicely with a cropped crocodile-embossed shell, and a tight, stretchy pencil skirt looked fresh attached to a billowy top. It was a new kind of sexy for LaPointe, and it felt less rigid than some past collections.
