Chanel Adds Another Model Musician to Its Ranks

These days, model musicians are an essential part of the fashion conversation, with women like Julia Cumming, Karen Elson, and Carla Bruni having shown that it’s possible for a runway star to reinvent themselves by sharing their vocal talents. And thanks to social media, it’s never been easier to post song covers and clips, without the aid of a demo tape or record deal. The latest girl to display both her musical gifts and catwalk potential is Sasha Belyaeva, a Russian newcomer who made a breakout performance at Chanel’s Fall 2016 couture collection. Dedicating eight years to studying violin before beginning her fashion career, Belyaeva was on a course to being a classical performer. “In the end, I chose to be a model instead—maybe at that moment the world had lost a genius violinist!” she says. But she’s moved on. “Nowadays you can’t stop me from playing guitar and singing.”

A bookworm with a love of art films, museum trips, and post-punk music, Belyaeva never saw herself as a fashion star. Encouraged by her father to consider modeling, she took a chance after he sought out photographers to shoot test shots for her. “[He was] overwhelmed with happiness when scouts from different agencies started to contact me, offering contracts.” Now signed with Select in London, and traveling the world to shoots and shows, Belyaeva is glad her father saw her potential. “It’s thanks to my father that I found myself doing what I am doing . . . I’ve come to understand that the world is much bigger and diverse than it seemed a couple of years ago when I was not modeling.”

If Belyaeva had any doubts about her new career, they dissipated at Chanel’s couture show, her jitters turning into excitement the moment the show began. “The night before, I was very anxious, thinking I would fall or ruin the show in some way. But when I first stepped on the runway I felt like I’d been walking for Chanel my whole life,” says Belyaeva “I enjoyed it all—the dress, the atelier, ambiance, the music. When it ended, all I wanted was to do it once more!” Succeeding at the show was a milestone, but getting the Lagerfeld seal of approval made the moment feel even more special. “During the general rehearsal I was very nervous because every model has to walk in front of [Karl] and he makes a final decision whether or not you will be in the show. But for me it went smoothly, he smiled and said ‘perfect.’ ” That doesn’t mean that Belyaeva has forgotten about her first love. “Right now I want to concentrate on modeling, but in the future, I do want to do something artistic. A career in music would be a dream come true.”
