The Sartorialist: A Blog with a Difference
By Massimo O'Neil
February 18, 2006 @ 9:26 PM - Paris Everyone is talking about fashion blogs at the moment, even if most of them read like stream of consciousness fashion warbles from the seventh row.

One site with a difference, however, is The Sartorialist, a wee mouthful of a name, we’ll agree, but a novel bite-sized approach to fashion.

Created by Scott Schuman five months ago, the Satorialist is essentially a men’s wear visual blog, which interprets fashion by concentrating on how editors, critics, buyers and models dress, rather than taking its lead from the catwalks.

A 38-year-old fashion “veteran,” Schuman worked on the wholesale end industry before launching his own designer showroom, Schuman, which represented young talent like Peter Som and James Coviello.

Schuman’s prose style ranges from complimentary to laudatory without, happily, plunging into the muck of obsequiousness that afflicts so many bloggers.

“At it's core The Sartorialist is a mens fashion blog which started because all of the "real" industry guys I knew were so much better dressed and inspirational to me than anything I would see in GQ or other magazines,” Schuman told FWD.

Blessed with a good eye, neat prose and the boundless energy of bloggers, Schuman is on track to 55,000 visitors/110,000 page views per a month. Readers also get to comment on The Sartorialist’s point and shoot portraits and commentaries with comments of their own. And folks like Carine Roitfeld, Jim Nelson, Meredith Melling Burke and a certain Irish critic we enjoy reading don’t escape unscathed.

Despite his fresh eye, Schuman does not entirely avoid that old fashion virus – taking oneself a tad seriously.

“Since The Sartorialist runs 98% of my own photographs, in an abstract way, I'm like a cross between Cathy Horyn and Bill Cunningham,” opines Scott.

Don’t just love the chutzpah. Try it yourself.

yes he generally has a great eye and an appreciation for unusual combo's. Thanks for the interview link Stylebites. Generally all his shots are great but I think he overrates Paris

I always browse his blog often. Rarely do I ever disagree with the people he photographs.

I didn't know that....

His name was mentioned in one of my classes at school yesterday, his pictures are quite inspirational.

i don't find the blog particularly interesting...in terms of what is written...

but i do admire the balls it takes to approach some people and ask to take their photo..
though it is of course much easier now that he has vogue behind him...
i'm sure people practically throw themselves in front of his camera these days......

Thanks for sharing! I agree that he has great eyes! Love his snapshots and comments!

Just thought that this was a bit funny..

Matt: I can tell something is wrong.
Imaginary Socialite: It’s stupid.
Matt: So? Tell.
Imaginary Socialite: All of my friends get stopped on the street by trend spotters who want to take their photo and nobody ever stops me. I feel completely fashion deficient.
Matt: Aw, don’t be sad. Maybe you’re just walking too fast for people to stop you. You know how you get in your iPod zone.
Imaginary Socialite: Matt, I’m so upset. Why am I not on the Sartorialist?!
Matt: No, don’t worry…
[Enter Jennifer on Fifth Avenue and 10th St.]
Jennifer: Hi, I work for this British trend firm - can I take your picture for our website?
Matt: See! I told you not to worry!
Jennifer: Are you crying?
Imaginary Socialite: Oh, no, it’s just the wind…

"its why I buy so much apc" Thats hilarious!

I am another major Sartorialist fan. I sent him an email once to tell him how much I  him and I was surprised to see a reply in my inbox the next day. (Never mind that it was probably an automated reply... It made me feel special :crush: )

I browse his blog from time to time, I like that you can find so many different styles done in a good way in his blog. He doesn't just go for the uber trendy as some streetstyle blogs do, and as would be very easy to do in a city like New York I would imagine.

I've been a constant reader of his blog ever since it started. I like maybe 30% of it's content (which is a lot). What I dislike, and what has made me visit the blog less often, and view the comments less often, is the fact that he DELETE'S or, doesn't allow negative comments. Rarely do you read any harsh, negative comments. So IMO, even though it's a very well visited blog, I'm so pi..ed that the comments are so heavily biased and moderated. Several times have I written constructive criticism, or plainly my view on some of the photos. ALL the negative ones have not been approved. I used to visit this forum a lot when I first found out about it, especially the what am I wearing now thread, or whatever it's called. To my big surprise, even there, it's not allowed to give any critique towards other peoples clotes, syle etc. nor do I get any useful feedback for the outfits I posted. I'm sick of the fact that one have to be all goody goody positive about everything, and not be able to express ones opinion. That's how you LEARN - through other peoples feedback. I don't learn much from hearing "ooh that looks so good on you" "I love those read shoes" etc. - it's great for validation. But seriously Scott Schuman, and tfs users, get a grip and accept critique - ASK for critique! and use whatever feedback you want, and discard the feedback you don't want to use. There...I've said my peace. Critique is welcome ;)
