Quite surprised there isn't already on the influential Sex Pistols or Lydon's later band Public Image Ltd.
I got "Never Mind the Bullocks..." when I was around 14 or so thinking that it was cool because the Sex Pistols were like "the" punk band. I listened to it a few times but couldn't get into it at all. I mean, ok, there's sneering and mean lyrics, but it was kind of one dimensional and thus boring. Also, the fact that Malcom McLaren stole the whole punk idea from Richard Hell and the New York gang is more than a bit annoying. Anyway, I sold the record and never bothered with the Pistols again.
More recently I got into early Buzzcocks stuff and read that the Pistols were basically responsible for the Bzzcocks and other UK punk bands. I looked up some live footage of the Pistols and sort of began to understand their appeal. I think historical context is pretty important... After all that over-the-top glam rock of the early 70s, punk was like a saviour.
I still don't really care for the Pistols in terms of their music for music's sake, but much more interesting is PiL! I've only listened to Metal Box (Second Issue) and it's weird, verging on being painful to the ears, but so fun to listen to. I want to look into more PiL records, so if anyone has any suggestions...
Also, John Lydon is sort of a style icon to me, which is weird, because I normally like minimalism. But what did it for me suddenly was seeing him (on Old Grey Whistle Test) wear this long red coat, and when he took it off underneath he was wearing this mustard yellow jacket with a red tie. I was just like "ok, he is cool."
