Shoegaze

I wouldn't call JAMC shoegaze, really. Though I do love them.

The ultimate has to be My Bloody Valentine. Never in my life will a find an album that changed my musical taste so much. I began to explore so many different types of music thanks to MBV and it really opened my mind. I never get sick of Loveless years on.

Lush were actually one of the first bands to be labelled as shoegazers by the press, and their early albums do fit in with that aesthetic, while the later albums became more poppy and clean.

You are right, but their sound was more poppy and punky than authentic shoegaze. Especially with influences like Gang of Four. Not shoegaze, though labeled as.

OH i must completely agree, Loveless is easily one of the most amazing albums i've ever listened too.

Am I seriously being schooled in "authentic shoegaze" by someone who was a wriggling sperm on a long, tough swim when Isn't Anything was released in 1988?

I guess everyone's entitled to an opinion nowadays, but when it comes to this particular slice of musical history, I'm an eyewitness source. Those of us going to shows at the time certainly thought of them as shoegaze.

We were a bit more dubious about Swervedriver, but grudgingly accepted them into the fold as well.

Speakings of Isn't Anything, I was listening to that for the first time in ages. Good album.

I think it's cool bands like JAMC are getting a bit of interest out of younger folks. They come from my little area of Glasgow and went to my high school same as Bobby Gillespie (obv considering he drummed) and most of the rest of the Scream so I am proud of that :)

No worries, and no harm done. I thought it was hilarious. :flower:

Anyone remember Kitchens Of Distinction?

Hi!
Can Explosion In The Sky, Broken Social Scene, The Album Leaf, Everett, Mogwai and Sigur Ros be labelled as shoegaze too? or else what?

Has anyone heard Grouper? I've been listening to Cover the Windows and the Walls quite a bit since I got it. Beautiful drones.

shoegaze...what's that?

damn me for being Hispanic!!!
seriously.

i'm really into this so much that i'm trying to start a band, a shoegaze band in Spanish and no one wants in...
well, i'm willing to do it bilingual, since i do have songs in English, but Spanish would be SOOO COOOOL since there are no other Spanish shoegaze bands that i know. i need a bassist, drummer, second guitarist, and a true vocalist (I'm ok, probably need vocal training)..hopefully a girl. a girl in a band...instant cool status.

my fav songs
Slowdive - Souvlaki Space Sation, When the Sun Hits
MVB - only shallow, When you sleep, what you want
Amusement Parks on Fire - Venus is Cancer, Eighty Eight, Blackout

:mowhawk:

so how did it go a.t. ?

as i probably won't get to see them here in NYC.
tickets are sold out...

unless...

AGREED, it's amazing what one album can do eh? I can't even remember how I came across them.. but one song lead to another then I had an explosion of shoegaze obsession.

Souvlaki makes me sad but it's so beautiful that I can't resist sometimes.

I've recently discovered Brian Eno, who makes brilliant atmospheric music.. as well as Ulrich Schnauss, who has a very optimistic, lush ambient sound (check out Clear Day, Monday Paracetamol, Between Us and Them).

I'd love it if some of you shared your favorite shoegaze artists!

haute femme, i LOVE ulrich schnauss! i've been listening to the album "a strangely isolated place" quite a bit. as for brian eno, he's on my list of artists i need to check out. some of my other favorite shoegaze artists include curve, ride, my bloody valentine, slowdive, lush, the stone roses (do they count?), etc. i also love how many modern bands these days are incorporating shoegaze elements into their music, such as m83, film school, and a place to bury strangers.

ah I forgot the stone roses! that video up there reminds me of them.. what a cool song, thanks for sharing a.t. and I want to know if you ever saw MBV!

I was able to see My Bloody Valentine. They (Kevin) didn't cancel

It was overwhelming!!!
Their sound was very very very big and was beautiful. My ear screamed!

For me, When You Sleep was the most impressive.
Their sound, mood, light, beautiful-green-movie etc... It changed an impression of the song.
