Shoes that have long straps that tie

You know, the ones you wrap around your ankle/lower leg a few times and then tie. Do you tie them in back of your leg, or in front? Is it just down to preference, or does one way look "better"? I have some shoes that tie, and I've got them tied in front, but I don't like how it looks really.. I'd tie them in back but the straps are the wrong length-they end up either too long, or too short to tie a bow with. Thoughts?
 
I've seen it tied usually on the outside of the leg, like a ballerina's pointe shoe.
 
on the inside or outside of the leg. a knot will do fine. just tuck the ends into the last line of the ribbon around your leg.

i think it's the only way that it can look good. look at pointe shoes. ballet dancers tie their shoes nicely. some girls put the ribbons up to their knee. looks rather strange then. keep the ribbons low and don't make a tie.
 
i think they look so stylish and beautiful, i saw a photo of coco rocha on the runway wearing them and she looked amazing
